Title:   The Heart and the Cardiac Cycle


Abstract:

This seminar is part of a lecture that would normally be taught in an engineering systems physiology course. I will first briefly go over the structure and the anatomy of the heart, before discussing the mechanical events of the heart that lead to blood flow throughout the body. The talk will conclude with a brief description of cardiac output and the means by which the body regulates cardiac output to meet metabolic demands.


Biography:

Travis Meyer is a Ph.D. student in Biomedical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology/Emory University with expected graduation in Summer 2019.  His research interest is on the implementation of DNA nanotechnology for biomedical applications.  Travis was heavily involved in teaching as a graduate student, serving as a co-instructor and receiving several awards, including the BME Outstanding Teaching/Mentorship award and the Georgia Tech Teaching Assistant of the Year. Originally from Houston, TX, Travis graduated from Vanderbilt University with a BE in Biomedical Engineering in 2012.
