Dear Colleagues,

Arizona State University welcomes applications for an exciting interdisciplinary Research Scientist position within the department of Applied Sciences and Mathematics. Applications from people with a variety of different academic backgrounds welcome to apply, including but not limited to fisheries science, economics, computational science, mathematics, ecology, biology, geography, and statistics. The incumbent will work with the PI to develop and use quantitative approaches (statistical and agent-based modeling techniques) towards representing fish population dynamics, behavior and decision making of fishers, and the distribution of coral reef fish populations relative to sub-tropical and tropical benthic habitat characteristics and types (i.e. artificial and natural coral reefs, sea grass beds, etc.). The applicant’s specific role in the project will depend on their experience, training, and background. Analyses will be used to support the expansion and further development of an existing agent-based model representing fish population dynamics, habitat, fishing behavior for reef fish in the Gulf of Mexico. The model will be used for several purposes, including understanding the effects of the historic 2010 oil spill on fishing communities, essential fish habitat, and fish population dynamics in the Gulf of Mexico. The incumbent will also have the opportunity to develop their own parallel research track, ideally but not necessarily related to one of the research themes described. The position will afford the successful applicant with opportunities to publish in high profile peer review journals, give presentations at national and international conferences, collaborate with Federal fisheries managers and scientists, work with fishers and other industry representatives, contribute to developing grant applications, and other opportunities depending on interest.

For more information and to apply, please see the attached full position description and application instructions.
