Update - with various changes to my PC (including new motherboard and
CPU, but more significantly a replacement of the Linux install with one
based around the 2.6 kernel) this time has dropped to around 1100 when
the system is lighly loaded.

My sims that aim for 35 fps now get very close, hovering in the 33.5 to
34 range.
