We are also extending the deadline for the dissertation completion stipend until the end of the month (Tue March 31, at 5pm).  Please consider putting in an application if you are close to completing your dissertation and could use fellowship support to help you do so.

Dear All,

This year, the Department is again able to offer 1 Dissertation Completion Stipend (for AY 2020-2021).  Details of the stipend, and application procedures, are below.  If you have any questions, please just let me know.

Dissertation Completion Stipends: 1 per year @ $17,000 (Provost’s Award)

·      Applications due Monday March 16

·      Student must forgo outside employment during grant period (i.e., fall and spring semesters)

·      This stipend is to fund writing, not research. Recipient of this stipend is expected to complete (and defend) the dissertation no later than the end of the summer after their stipend year



Applicants should submit the following materials to the Graduate Committee:

  1.  Dissertation overview (maximum 3 pages, double-spaced)
  2.  A sample chapter of the dissertation
  3.  Short c.v.
  4.  Original calendar from dissertation prospectus
  5.  New calendar for the proposed stipend year, showing the student’s schedule for completion
  6.  List of external grants applied for (noting any received)
  7.  Letter of support from the dissertation advisor, specifically assessing the significance of the student’s project and his/her ability to complete and defend the dissertation within the year.



Please condense the above materials (except the advisor’s letter of support) into a single pdf and email to Sam Lebovic ([log in to unmask]) by Monday March 16, 2020 at 5pm

The Graduate Committee will announce the winner of this year’s award in late March.
