Library Company of Philadelphia
Program in Early American Economy and Society
Fellowships for 2015-2016

The Library Company of Philadelphia’s Program in Early American Economy and Society invites applications for three types of fellowship awards during 2015-2016. These research fellowships are designed to promote scholarship in early American economy and society, broadly defined, from its colonial beginnings to the 1850s. Possible research topics include Atlantic and global connections of the American economy; its commerce, business, technology, manufacturing, agriculture, internal development, or political economy; the history of race and the economy, capitalism, households, or gendered economies. All fellows are expected to be resident in Philadelphia and conduct research in the area for the duration of awards. Applicants for the post-doctoral and dissertation fellowships may submit proposals based not only on the extensive collections at the Library Company, but also on the printed and manuscript materials of other institutions in the Philadelphia area. Short-term fellows should spend a continuous month of research in the collections of the Library Company. Fellowships will be awarded as follows:

One post-doctoral fellowship that is tenable for nine consecutive months of residency from September 1, 2015 to May 31, 2016; or it may be divided between two scholars, for the periods September 1, 2015 to January 15, 2016, or January 15 to May 31, 2016. The stipend is $40,000 for the full nine months, or $20,000 if the fellowship is divided. Applicant must have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. by September 1, 2015. Deadline for receipt of all materials (see below) is November 1, 2014.

One dissertation research fellowship, carrying a stipend of $20,000, tenable for nine consecutive months of residency from September 1, 2015 to May 31, 2016; or it may be divided between two scholars, for the periods September 1, 2015 to January 15, 2016, or January 15 to May 31, 2016. Deadline for receipt of all materials (see below) is March 1, 2015.

Four one-month fellowships will also be awarded, carrying stipends of $2,000 each and tenable for one month of continuous residence and research at the Library Company between June 1, 2015 and May 31, 2016. Deadline for receipt of all materials (see below) is March 1, 2015.

Please begin by filling out an electronic cover sheet at www.librarycompany.org/fellowships<http://www.librarycompany.org/fellowships>. Then create one continuous PDF file that includes (a) a cover letter stating clearly the award or awards being sought and for which tenable period; (b) a brief résumé; (c) a brief research proposal of four to five pages outlining the larger project and the research to be pursued during the fellowship; and (d) for post-doc and dissertation fellowship awards, a writing sample of no more than 25 pages (no writing sample is required for a one-month award). This PDF file should be submitted to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>. For the post-doctoral and dissertation fellowships, two separate letters of recommendation also should be submitted as PDF files to this email address; for the short-term awards, at least one separate letter of recommendation should be submitted.
