Ford's Theatre Digital Public History Intern

Want to work at the intersection of curatorial, digital, and educational work at a historic site? To gain valuable experience in historical research and writing for public audiences in the digital realm? To learn skills increasingly sought as more history work moves online?

The 2014 Fall Digital Public History Intern will have the opportunity to learn about Education programs and initiatives through research and preparation of online historical content, which may include some or all of the following:


  *   Research and write additional, strengthened historical content for Ford's Theatre web pages in preparation for the 150th anniversary of the Lincoln assassination.
  *   Research already-digitized responses to the Lincoln assassination from its immediate aftermath, and advise on integration of those responses into the forthcoming Remembering Lincoln digital collection.
  *   Translate the content of interactive displays in the Ford's Theatre Museum and Center for Education and Leadership into web content.
  *   Create interactive exhibitions in the Google Cultural Institute platform.
  *   Participate in digital strategy meetings.
  *   Assist in planning the upcoming NEH Landmarks summer teacher institute, including creating web content per NEH guidelines.
  *   Light administrative work, such as data entry and document support (very small percentage of time).

The ideal candidate will have interest in preparing historical material for broad audiences through online digital media. This internship is ideal for an advanced undergraduate history major, history M.A. or Ph.D. student with interest in digital public history, Library/Information Sciences graduate student, or Museum Studies graduate student.

The period of this internship is approximately September 15, 2014, to December 19, 2014. This is an unpaid position, and is expected to be between 15 and 20 hours per week, to be agreed upon by the supervisor and the intern. Attendance at occasional evening or weekend events will be agreed upon in advance of those events. The internship term and weekly hours will be confirmed in the internship offer letter.

Intern shall report to Digital Projects Manager David McKenzie, and in his absence to Director of Educational Programming Sarah Jencks.
