Free screening of Academy Award-nominated documentary film "Last Days in Vietnam"
Sunday, March 29th, at 6:30 PM
Johnson Center Cinema
Please join us for a special screening of Rory Kennedy's 2014 Academy Award-nominated film, "Last Days in Vietnam." The screening will be preceded by a brief ceremony to celebrate Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day and honor the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War. After the film, Prof. Meredith Lair of the Department of History & Art History will moderate a discussion with CAPT Paul Jacobs, who participated in the evacuation of South Vietnamese civilians from Saigon, Dave Nguyen, a prominent member of the local Vietnamese community, and members of the audience.
"Last Days in Vietnam" depicts the frantic, final hours of American involvement in South Vietnam. With North Vietnamese troops closing in on the capital of Saigon, uncertainty and terror gripped the city. While the US ambassador equivocated, American civilian and military personnel took it upon themselves to begin the evacuation of South Vietnamese civilians in danger of reprisal should the communists take over. Featuring interviews with American and South Vietnamese survivors of the evacuation and never-before-seen footage, the film highlights the courage, humanity, and pluck of rescuers and rescued alike amidst the grim confusion of the war's end.
