Today I was at the headquarters of the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (PATC) over in Vienna and they need help with their archives which date back to 1920. The long-time archivist passed away in February and he left behind a sort of organized collection, but since he was in his mid-80s, a lot of the work that needed to be done sorting, discarding, and organizing materials didn’t happen. The club’s executive director wants help, needs help, has to have help. I am a club member and know the collection well and so can help mentor whoever wants to do this. It’s really a great opportunity (described below) for someone interested in a career in archival work. Can you please circulate this to the grad students?

Applied History Internship, Fall 2021



The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (PATC) located in Vienna, Virginia, is in need of an intern for a project focused on planning the future of their archives. Founded in 1927, PATC is one of the oldest outdoor conservation and recreation clubs in the United States. The archives, long managed by a club volunteer, extend back to 1920 and include a reasonably large number of documents, texts, and artifacts. The goal of the internship will be to provide the club’s leadership with an assessment of the collection and recommendations for a way forward in 2022 for organizing the materials and making those materials available to club members and outside researchers. For a student interested in a career in archival work, this is a truly unique opportunity.



The collection is not without organization. Most of texts and many of the photographs have been scanned, but the metadata associated with those scans is uncertain. No finding aid to the collection exists, however the materials are (mostly) organized in archival boxes and there is an inventory of what is contained in the boxes.



Professor Mills Kelly will be the faculty mentor to the intern and will work closely with the person who works on this internship. Club leaders will also provide assistance and context for the collection. Professor Kelly is a historian of the Appalachian Trail and also a club member and he has worked extensively in this collection over the past several years and so is familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of the collection.
