The Visiting Filmmakers Series has a great event coming up next week (March 30th) that we feel folks in the History and Art History department would find interesting and
beneficial. Plus, Dr. Yevette Richards Jordan is hosting the event!

Descendant with filmmakers Margaret Brown and Kern Jackson
Thursday, March 30 at 5:00pm
Johnson Center Cinema
Join us for a free screening of the new Netflix documentary, Descendant, followed by a discussion with
the film's director/producer Margaret Brown and co-writer/co-producer Kern Jackson. The event will be hosted by Dr. Yevette Richards Jordan from the department of History and Art History at Mason.
In Descendant, award-winning filmmaker Margaret Brown returns to her hometown of Mobile, Alabama, to document the
search for and historic discovery of the Clotilda, the last known ship to arrive in the United States, illegally carrying 110 kidnapped Africans.
The current residents of Africatown in Mobile, Alabama, have shared stories about their origins for generations. Their community was founded by enslaved ancestors who
were transported in 1860 aboard the Clotilda. Now, the long-awaited discovery of the Clotilda’s remains offers this community a tangible link to their ancestors and validation of a history so many tried to bury.
