OSCAR Launches Research and Mentoring Program with MITRE

The Office of Student Scholarship, Creative Activities, and Research (OSCAR) recently launched a new pilot program with the MITRE Corporation. Students accepted in the program will have the opportunity to assist with corporate research as well as be mentored by MITRE employees.

Deadline: Tuesday, March 16

Stipend: Students will be paid through federal work-study

MITRE interest areas include: AI; Data Science; Health Informatrics; Biotechnology; Climate and Energy; Cybersecurity; Microelectronics; Advanced Manufacturing; Quantum Comuting; Acquisitions; and Next Generation Communications Networks.

Biotechnology Summer Job Opportunity

The NSLC is looking for enthusiastic, hard-working individuals who enjoy working with high school students and have experience in the academic fields of our programs, leadership development, residential life, and/or office administration.
Job description: Team Advisors guide students through their NSLC experience. Each TA is responsible for a small group of 12-16 students. As a TA, you will: lead small group discussions and debriefs, teach academic and leadership sessions, assist Administrative staff, Professors and Leadership Facilitators with program components, serve as a chaperone during off-campus trips and evening social activities, and reside in the dormitory serving as a Resident Advisor
.

Eligibility: Current college sophomores – recent graduates. Current freshmen are considered for the Assistant Team Advisor positions.

Duration: June 6 – July 2, 2021

Stipend: Stipend will be given as well as housing, food, and travel expenses will be covered

HIVE Lab Internship

HIVE  (High Throughput Virtual Environment) is a powerful platform for building genome analysis pipelines. HIVE is the bioinformatics tool used by the FDA to research and evaluate clinical trials and another research, and GWU maintains the only operational clone of this platform. There are several projects in our group, the flagship project is BioCompute, which aims to standardize the communication of bioinformatic workflows. An instance of a workflow written in the BioCompute format is called a BioCompute Object (BCO). Currently there are a few potential projects that students can help with: Build and test next generation sequencing pipelines on Amazon Web Services (AWS) using HIVE, record these pipelines as BCOs, helping to lead training workshops at the FDA to gather feedback and improve the BioCompute specification (networking opportunity for students), HIVE testing and maintenance, building and testing the BCO Editor (test version here), building and maintaining our website.

Program description: The Technical Career Field (TCF) Trainee Program is a two-year program that develops Biomedical Engineers to be effective Program Managers in a VA Medical Center. Upon completion of the program, the Biomedical Engineer will either stay at the training site if a position is available or relocate to a different VA Medical Center within the United States where he/she will assume the full responsibilities of a practicing Biomedical Engineer.

Qualifications: B.S/B.E., M.S./M.E., or higher degree earned by Sept. 1st , 2021 in any Engineering discipline from an ABET accredited program, Biomedical/Clinical Engineering degrees preferred. U.S. citizenship required. U.S. Veterans welcome.

SWE Scholarship

In 2020, the Society of Women Engineers awarded nearly 260 new and renewed scholarships valued at more than $1,000,000. SWE Scholarships support those who identify as a female/woman and are pursuing an associate, bachelor or graduate degree in engineering, engineering technology and computer science both in the United States and internationally.

If you will be a sophomore through Ph.D. candidate in the 2020-2021 academic year, apply online for a SWE Scholarship now through February 15, 2021. If you will be a freshman in the upcoming fall semester, you may apply March 1 through May 1, 2021Learn more on our SWE scholarships page.
