Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Application
3MT® is a research communication competition where Ph.D. students present their doctoral research to a non-specialist audience using only one single visual aid—all in three minutes. This exercise encourages
graduate students to think about their research from an outsider’s perspective, hones their presentation skills, and provides a forum for a cross-disciplinary exchange of exciting ideas and information.
Registration deadline: 5:00 pm, Monday, February 15, 2021
Preliminary elimination round:
Friday, March 5, 2021
The Mason 3MT® competition will be held
virtually as part of the Mason Graduate Interdisciplinary Conference on
Friday, April 9, 2021.

HIVE Lab Internship
HIVE (High
Throughput Virtual Environment) is a powerful platform for building genome analysis pipelines. HIVE is the bioinformatics tool used by the FDA to research and evaluate clinical trials and another research, and GWU maintains the only operational clone of this
platform. There are several projects in our group, the flagship project is BioCompute, which aims to standardize the communication of bioinformatic workflows. An instance of a workflow written in the BioCompute format is called a BioCompute Object (BCO). Currently
there are a few potential projects that students can help with: Build and test next
generation sequencing pipelines on Amazon Web Services (AWS) using HIVE, record these pipelines as BCOs, helping to lead training workshops at the FDA to gather feedback and improve the BioCompute specification (networking opportunity for students), HIVE testing
and maintenance, building and testing the BCO Editor
(test
version here), building and maintaining our website.

SPOTLIGHT:
Rachel
O’Connell had an internship with the PCTEST Lab. See her story here:
“The process of finding and getting an internship had a lot of steps which led to success. First, I spoke with a bunch of professors (i.e. Professor Eugene Kim), friends, and other professionals (ex: the career
center at GMU) to help me refine my resume and build my CV. Once I was armed with these papers, I started beefing up my LinkedIn account and applied to 30 internships over the course of the Fall 2020 semester. I finally won an internship with PCTEST lab at
Element Materials Technology in Maryland!
In my internship I am currently working on Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) analysis for mobile devices under the purview of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). It involves generating bio-signals from
radio frequencies via a call box and doing subsequent tests on that data using computer programs and lab testing. If you'd like to know more about PCTEST, I encourage people to look at our home website at https://www.pctest.com/.
Also, please contact me via email if you would like to hear more about my story and how I made it happen.“
If you have questions for Rachel, please connect with her through our Bioengineering LinkedIn site or email Claudia Borke ([log in to unmask]). Rachel will be graduating this semester.
Did you have an internship last summer and would like to tell us about it? Is your senior design group on the brink of making a global impact or you would like to share your lab experience here in the
newsletter? Please email a short summary, picture and a confirmation for information release:
