Dear Students,

If you are interested in taking Stat 778 in Spring, please read the following.

  1. Stat 778 should have had an updated title and description, or removed at least the words "in C" in the title.
  2. The justification for the updates is given in the attached email below.
  3. I am new to GMU but will have a course webpage for this class up in Jan.
  4. If you need an override due to incorrect online information on the prerequisite, please submit the following to me:
    1. Your G#
    2. Your current status, MS or Ph.D. student
    3.  Your evidence that you have met the prerequisite by one of the following:
      1.  A transcript from your previous institute that shows a similar course to STAT 652;
      2.  An equivalency approval statement from a GMU Stat 652 instructor.

Many thanks.

Wish you all have a fantastic Thanksgiving

Many thanks, Jennifer. Do you mean that you have also submitted the title change?

Linda, Wanli and Martin - May I assume that you are (or will be) familiar with CIM?

Thank you,

Jiayang

Dear Jennifer -

We need to change the name of STAT 778 that our former faculty Dr. Diao taught in Spring:

                  STAT 778: Algorithm/Simulation for Stats in C

to

                   STAT 778: Statistical Computing

as how itis named in other top Statistics departments. or at least remove  the words "in C" to make it

                  STAT 778: Algorithm/Simulation for Statistics

Linda has already updated the description as given in the enclosed document.

Rationale: It is old-school to restrict the programming language to C. The key is to take advantage of R and its interface with another popular programming language, Python, Java, Julia, C, Ruby, or Graphviz, etc. In my attachment, I

have included my update, the original Stat 778's description, and two others from UC Berkeley and CMU. Mine is my mutation or development based on a Stanford Univ's course on Statistical Computing, which I have taught and updated for many years. Essentially, I would cover statistical computing fundamentals (including most of Diao's topics at varying depth and adding missing ones), plus new/modern topics, computing tricks, and goodies, including an interface of R with either C, or C, JAVA, Python, Julia, and others.

Please let me know if the enclosed document is sufficient to get approval from the graduate council to change the title, asap.
