Good afternoon,

Each year, the Department of Statistics hosts a Math Refresher Course on three Saturdays at the beginning of the Fall semester as a free service to our incoming and returning M.S. and Ph.D. students. If you wish to attend these courses, please RSVP by Friday, August 14th.

This is considered this an essential component of the graduate curriculum. Every semester there are students who have difficulty in our courses because they have either taken the prerequisite math courses a long time ago, or they didn't fully understand the material when they took them (even if their grade shows otherwise). For this reason, the Department decided to invest in a refresher course to assist our students in mastering the mathematics needed to succeed in our M.S. program. While this courses is primarily for M.S. students, several incoming Ph.D. students have said that they found it beneficial.

This year the schedule is as follows:

Saturday, August 29, Review of Algebra, Set Theory

Saturday, September 12, Review of Univariable and Multivariable Calculus

Saturday. September 19, Review of Matrix Algebra

All sessions run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will be in compliance with George Mason University's COVID-19 rules regarding social distancing and mask wearing. Breakfast will be provided by the Department. Students can eat on campus during the lunch break. The instructor is Dr. Tigran Markaryan, who is an adjunct faculty, recipient of the first Ph.D. in Statistical Science, and Executive Vice President of Custom Analytics at Ipsos MMA.

We look forward to your participation.

Dr. Markaryan will contact you with more information closer to the time of the sessions.
