“ Designing Smart Sensors to Improve
First Responders’ Response Time”

Imagine an instant replay for first responders. Visualizing and viewing their own behavior when responding to a simulated emergency may change their behavior during the next run and promote their learning
in teams and individually to ultimately improve response time in an actual emergency. We deployed a digital twin representation of an arena building along with environmental, location, occupancy and video sensors combined with artificial intelligence algorithms
to detect and visualize important response time intervals and behavior of first responders during an active violence incident simulation. I will demonstrate some of the data from the live simulation runs with first responders in the Eagle Bank Arena on George
Mason’s campus and how we are attempting to integrate data from several Internet of Things smart sensors and video devices along with artificial intelligence to enhance response time as well as learning and training for first responder teams.
