Good evening everyone!
Below you will find a summary of items that were discussed at the February 19, 2020 graduate council meeting.


PROV 701: Preparing for Careers in the Academy is being offered again. Please encourage your graduate students to apply to participate in this year-long professional development program funded through at Mason through by the Office of Graduate Education and the Stearns Center for Teaching and Learning. The program is designed to provide a multidisciplinary community for participating graduate students and complement the support participating students receive within their programs/from their faculty advisors. 
Application deadline: Monday, March 30, 2020. For more information or to submit an application, visit:
Summer support for Presidential Scholars has been approved by the Office of Graduate Education along with a request for schools and colleges receiving this graduate student summer support to consider funding one additional doctoral student per doctoral program. This combined support will provide an addition ~100 funded students in summer 2020.
New program approval process presented by the Office of Graduate Education, which moves new program approval process to one meeting. This comes with the understanding that all units proposing new programs will 1) work with partnering units on all interdisciplinary components of the program prior to the meeting; and 2) take the appropriate steps prior to the meeting to develop a new program that aligns with the University strategic plan and meets all SACCS and SCHEV requirements. 

Graduate Inclusion and Access (GIA) Scholarship applications closed on Monday, February 3, 2020 and the Office of Graduate Education received 71 applicants.  Applications were screened for eligibility criteria and 45 applications moved forward to the selection Committee.  In late February - early March, the Committee will notify departments if their applicants are finalists and confirm admit status and moving ahead with offer. In early March, the Office of Graduate Education will contact the selected applicants; and all 71 applications will be notified of outcome.
- Summer Research Fellowship applications closed on Monday, January 24, 2020, and the Office of Graduate Education received 73 applications.

3 Minute Thesis  (3MT®) applications closed on Friday, February 7, 2020, and the Office of Graduate Education received 72 applicants (CEHD: 3, CHHS: 10, CHSS: 19, COS: 19, Schar: 8, S-CAR: 3, VSE: 10).

- Mason Graduate Interdisciplinary Conference (MGIC) proposals closed on Friday, January 31, 2020, and there were 84 applicants.  Of the 84 applicants, 32 were accepted for oral presentations and 30 were accepted for poster presentations. 

The Graduate Student Guide draft was presented and feedback requested before the next graduate council meeting. The new draft will then be shared with the broader community for additional feedback.

Old Business:
- AP.6.9 and AP.6.10 Residency Requirements – residency requirement removed and replaced by institutional credits (with exception that AP.6.10 Master's change to doctoral), to include, the addition of the following statement under AP.6.4.2 Nondegree Student Status: a maximum of 12 credits can be transferred to a degree or certificate program – APPROVED. 


Discussion: Policies related to AP.6.9 and AP.6.10 proposed changes.

AP.6.8 Stackable credentials (with exception that the word “future” be removed from bullet #8 under AP.6.8 Requirements for Graduate Certificates and from paragraph #2 under AP.6.8.2 Admissions) – APPROVED.

Proposed AP.6.4.5 Graduate Student Parental Leave of Absence – being further revised for a final vote before final AY 2020-2021 catalog deadline.

AP.6.9.6 Individualized Dual Masters Degrees – TABLED.
