Dear All,

Next Wednesday, Oct 2, the Modern History Workshop will be discussing Johanna Bockman’s draft chapter “Markets Created by White Rage” (attached). A note from Johanna is pasted below.

We’ll meet from noon to 1 in the department conference room – I’ll look forward to seeing many of you then.

Best,
Sam

Thanks to everyone for reading this chapter. This chapter is really a very first draft. It is part of a book tentatively called either 1) Just one block: Race, Radical Politics, and Revanchism in Washington, DC., or
2) Sociology in My Neighborhood: Gentrification and Displacement on One Block in Washington, DC.
The idea for the book came out of a blog I started writing after I finished my earlier book. The book explores a series of displacements on the block between 6th and 7th St SE, G and I St, SE, by Eastern Market, near my house. Really this is a micro-history that shows concretely what happens with gentrification from the 1890s to the present. It also shows why this block is so valuable to many groups, since it has several globalizations moving through it including pan-Africanism linked to Howard University and modernist art linked to Mondrian. The first chapter is an exploration of the political life of the residents who lived in Navy Place, a set of alleys within the block. The third chapter is about where those displaced went. The fourth chapter examines the historic preservation movement on the block. The next chapters explore 1960s political movements, public-private partnerships, and the closure of Ellen Wilson Dwellings and displacement of the residents.
Thank you for reading this drafty chapter.
Johanna
