·         Third time’s the charm. Mechanical engineering students place third at annual NACE competition.

 

·         Graduate from Mason’s Pre-college Cybersecurity Program launches award-winning start-up. Shrinath Iyer joined Mason Engineering’s Pre-college Cybersecurity Program in seventh grade with little exposure to the field. Four years later, he won first place for the best start-up company at the Loudoun Young Entrepreneurship Academy.

 

·         Computer science professor receives National Science Foundation Award to defend software from cyber attacks. Mason Engineering researcher Jon Bell is fighting cybersecurity attacks on the front lines, defending­­ software from breaches such as the one that hit Equifax in 2017. He recently received a prestigious CAREER Award, an honor that recognizes early career researchers, from the National Science Foundation, for his research proposal Amplifying Developer-Written Tests for Code Injection Vulnerability Detection.

May 3, CASBBI, 1 p.m., Krasnow Institute Room 229. The Center for Adaptive Systems for Brain-Body Interactions (CASBBI), led by Siddhartha Sikdar (bioengineering), Jim Thompson (psychology), and Lynn Gerber (health administration and policy), has been selected for base funding by a team led by the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President S. David Wu. This group meets weekly. Pizza and coffee are provided.

 

 

May 3, Patriot Pitch, Spring 2019 edition, 1-4 p.m., MIX@Fenwick

Patriot Pitch is the sixth edition of a business idea competition organized by the Laboratory for IT Entrepreneurship (LITE), previously named PITCH IT. The competition is open to teams with at least one Mason student (all majors welcome). Teams will compete for a prize of $200, and top teams will be offered one-hour personalized startup coaching sessions. Students will present their business ideas to a panel of judges made up of faculty, entrepreneurs, and other business experts. Participants will receive valuable feedback from the judges, which will enhance their ability to present and market their ideas to early-stage investors.
