March 29 CASBBI, 1 p.m., Krasnow Institute Room 229. The Center for Adaptive Systems for Brain-Body Interactions (CASBBI), led by Siddhartha Sikdar (bioengineering), Jim Thompson (psychology), and Lynn Gerber (health administration and policy), has been selected for base funding by a team led by the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President S. David Wu. This group meets weekly. Pizza and coffee are provided.

 

March 28, 11 a.m., Learning Resource Center (INTO Mason Global Center, Rm. 1305). This session will cover requirements and eligibility for international graduate teaching assistants taking the Classroom English Language Teaching Demonstration, overall testing and scoring procedures, and topics related to the provision of tutoring for those students who need to improve their pronunciation, grammar, and fluency before assuming instructional responsibilities. April 3, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Open Call Photo Session. Johnson Center, Meeting Room E. Creative Services Photography will be holding a FREE OPEN CALL photo session for faculty, staff, and administrators who would like a head shot taken. The photo session is your opportunity to update your professional head shot for use on Mason-affiliated websites and publications. We encourage new hires, those who have not had an opportunity to get a photo taken, or those who would like a more current photo to attend the session. There is no need to RSVP for the session. Photographers work on a first come, first served basis.

 

April 16 – 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., Sixth Annual Volgenau School of Engineering Undergraduate Research Celebration. Dewberry Hall. Volgenau School of Engineering students will showcase their research and scholarship for the school and university community.

 

April 29, begins at 9 a.m. Andy Sage Memorial Capstone Competition. Various locations. Mason Engineering’s Department of Systems Engineering and Operations Research will host its second annual Andrew Sage Capstone Competition on April 29. The event will begin with a keynote at 9 a.m. and concludes with a banquet and shark tank competition where aspiring student entrepreneurs will make pitches to judges from 5 to 7 p.m. More information.

Chaowei Yang, Matthew Rice, Donglian Sun, Liang Zhao, Manzhu Yu receive funding from the National Science Foundation

 

Chaowei Yang, Matthew Rice, Donglian Sun, Liang Zhao, Manzhu Yu received funding from the NSF for Phase II I/UCRC [George Mason University]: Center for Spatiotemporal Thinking, Computing and Applications. Anticipated funding: $750,000.

 

Elise Miller-Hooks receives funding from the Virginia Transportation Research Council

 

Elise Miller-Hooks received funding from the VTRC for “Accounting for Downtime Effects in Maintenance & Restoration Scheduling for Routing, Periodic & Post Disaster Events.” Anticipated funding: $300,000.

Odds and Ends

 

To foster awareness of current IT security issues, ITS publishes a monthly newsletter on topics of interest to a general audience. The March newsletter is at http://itsecurity.gmu.edu/SecurityLiaisons/upload/March2019nws.pdf.  This month’s newsletter discusses proper disposal of mobile devices.
