This announcement should be shared with doctoral students in your program, particularly those planning to conduct dissertation research abroad. Eligibility: A student is eligible to receive a fellowship if he or she · Is a citizen/national of the United States OR is a permanent resident of the United States; · Is a graduate student in good standing at an institution of higher education in the United States who, when the fellowship begins, is admitted to candidacy in a doctoral program AND whose dissertation research relates to area studies / modern foreign languages OTHER THAN western Europe. · Is planning a teaching career in the United States upon graduation; and · Possesses adequate skills in the language(s) necessary to carry out the dissertation project. Duration of the Grant: · Students may propose research for 6 to 12 months, any time within the 18-month period of October 1, 2018 – March 31, 2020. The fellowship may not be renewed. Requirements and Preferences: The Federal Register document linked above contains important information about the types of research supported by this program, and must be read carefully by all prospective applicants. In particular, please note: · Research must focus on a specific world region, including Africa, East Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, South Asia, the Near East, Central and Eastern Europe and Eurasia, and the Western Hemisphere (excluding the United States and its territories). Research in western Europe is NOT supported. · Special preference is given to applicants conducting research using languages other than French, Spanish, and German. In general, applicants will be expected to have a sufficient level of proficiency in the language to conduct independent research. The use of translators or assistants will not be supported. · Certain fields of study will also be awarded preference in the review process, including: STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, mathematics), computer science, education (comparative or international), international development, political science, public health, or economics. Applicants are not required to be in one of these fields, but those who are will receive special consideration.
