Dear Doctoral Candidate:

 

Congratulations!  We invite you to join in the Commencement ceremony on FRIDAY, May 18, 2018.  NOTE: FRIDAY morning, not Saturday. There is general information available on our website at, https://www2.gmu.edu, for all potential participants; however, there are a few details that are specific to doctoral candidates.

 

In keeping with University tradition, doctoral candidates join the faculty and their major faculty advisor on Commencement morning for a continental breakfast and robing promptly at 8:15 a.m. ( not later than 8:30 a.m.)

Please meet in the Johnson Center Atrium.  Members of the University Events staff will be available to assist you with robing.  Following the breakfast, faculty marshals will direct you to assemble for the academic procession to the EagleBank Arena, which will start from the Johnson Center, Wilkins Plaza at 9:30 am.  In the case of rain, please meet by the EagleBank Arena Loading Dock Entrance, east side, lower level of the Arena. 

 

Doctoral candidates will have their degrees conferred individually by the President and are hooded during the Commencement ceremony.    Guest tickets are not required for the Commencement ceremony.  We do ask that you please register your intent to attend Commencement no later than April 28 at:  https://www.regonline.com/phd18 

You will also be able to request a special parking pass for Lot L to be mailed to you.   Please instruct your guests to arrive at 9 am when the doors to the EagleBank Arena open to insure seating at that venue.

 

PLEASE NOTE:  Only at the COMMENCEMENT Ceremony, will you be hooded by your major faculty advisor, if possible, or by the University Marshal.  Please invite your faculty advisor to join you for breakfast in the JC Atrium and the ceremony including the doctoral procession into the arena and as you cross the stage. 

 

You must wear George Mason regalia to participle in the ceremony. You may order your regalia from the bookstore in person or by phone at 703-993-3870.  All doctoral candidates are provided with two options for their regalia

Purchase Option              The cost to purchase the custom George Mason University regalia is approximately $799.00 +sales tax.  Measurements are required.  This may be done over the phone or via email. 

Rental Option                   The rental cost is $159.98 + sales tax.  The deadline to order is April 13, 2018.  After that date you will need to pay an additional $25.00 late charge.  The rental regalia will be available for pick-up beginning May 1, depending on when your order was placed.  We advise you to call ahead to make sure your regalia is here before making the trip.  You must return your rental regalia to the bookstore no later than Friday, May 25, 2018. All spring 2018 Doctoral candidates are eligible to participate in the Spring Commencement Ceremony.  Those individuals who graduated in winter but were unable to participate in the December graduation ceremony, may also have the option of participating in the Spring Commencement and will need to email [log in to unmask]
