Graduate Writing Tutor

Working Hours: 10-15 hours per week
Location: Fairfax
Salary: $18-20/hr, depending on experience and qualifications

 

Announcement

The Mason Writing Center invites graduate students from across the university to apply to join our vibrant tutoring staff of 30+ graduate and undergraduate students. Tutors provide personalized one-on-one consultations for graduate and undergraduate writers from all of Mason’s colleges and schools. They work with writers at any stage of the writing process, offering feedback, sharing strategies, and helping writers make a plan for developing or revising their work. 

Graduate writing tutors will begin work on January 18, 2018. The position entails 25 hours of paid training distributed across the first four weeks of the semester, after which tutors will work 10-15 hours per week, according to their preference, for the remainder of the spring and for all subsequent semesters.

Responsibilities

Graduate tutors conduct 45-minute face-to-face and asynchronous online (written feedback) tutoring sessions. They may also deliver workshops, contribute to writing center projects, and perform light administrative work between tutoring appointments.

 

Required Qualifications

Evidence of strong academic writing skills and performance; well-developed communication skills; friendly and professional demeanor.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Previous tutoring or teaching experience; demonstrated interest in writing education; familiarity with writing conventions of multiple disciplines; familiarity with writing center pedagogy.

 

Special Instructions
