Dear ECE Students, Spring 2018 registration has already started and I wanted to share some important information with you. You are receiving this email because you are currently either in the MS in Electrical Engineering or MS in Computer Engineering program. The message below contains some important information regarding the ECE 797 Scholarly Paper and ECE 795 Engineering Seminar requirements for both these programs. Please read and follow the instructions carefully. ECE 797: Scholarly Paper Requirement: If you have already completed 18 credits of graduate coursework, then you can enroll in one of the following courses this spring to meet the scholarly paper (SP) requirement (provided that the course fits into your approved plan of study): * ECE 611 Advanced Microprocessors * ECE 612 Real-Time Embedded Syst. * ECE 684 MOS Device Electronics * ECE 685 Nanoelectronics * ECE 722 Kalman Filter with Application * ECE 740 Digital Signal Processing Hardware Architectures * ECE 747 Cryptographic Engineering If you are taking one of the classes listed above to meet the SP requirement this spring, then you need to simultaneously register for the 0 credit ECE 797 Scholarly Paper section CRN 17809 via Patriotweb. This is needed so that the department can ensure you have met the SP requirement when you apply for graduation. If you take one of the above courses to meet the SP requirement but you do not enroll in ECE 797 then the ECE department may consider the requirement as not met and your graduation may be delayed. If you do not wish to fulfill the SP requirement during the coming semester, then you can still take one or more of the courses above. In that case, you do not need to register for ECE 797 this spring. Keep in mind that if you wish to take a course in the future to meet the SP requirement, you will need to register for ECE 797 together with it during the same semester. The department provides a list of all courses that meet the SP requirement on the following link. A subset of these courses are offered every semester. Other details can also be found within the same link: https://ece.gmu.edu/ms-electrical-engineering/scholarly-paper-new-rules Registration in ECE 797 is controlled. In order to register for ECE 797, you will need to contact Ms. Patricia Sahs ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) and provide her with your name, your request to enroll in ECE 797, your G number as well as what course you are taking to meet the SP requirement this spring. If you have at least 18 graduate credits already completed, then she can provide you with the override to register for ECE 797 CRN 17809. We are no longer accepting individualized section forms to enroll in ECE 797. ECE 795: Engineering Seminar Requirement: If Spring 2018 is your last semester in the program, then you need to enroll in ECE 795 CRN 15244 this spring in order to meet the seminar requirement. You do not need to request an override to enroll in ECE 795. You can directly enroll via Patriotweb. All degree candidates must attend a minimum of 6 graduate seminars approved for the degree program. Approved seminars will be publicized on the departmental webpage. Approved seminars are limited to: * ECE Distinguished Seminar Series * ECE Departmental Seminars * PhD Thesis Presentations * PhD Seminars. The department office will verify that the seminar requirement has been met and submit a grade of S (satisfactory) for ECE 795 upon completion of the requirement at the end of the semester of enrollment in ECE 795. Students who have not met the seminar requirement in their final semester must continue to register for ECE 795 in subsequent semesters until the requirement is met. Keep in mind that the last day to add any class for Spring 2018 including ECE 797 or ECE 795 is Monday, January 19th 2018. Please do not respond to this email with any request for overrides etc. Requests for overrides and additional questions may be directed to Ms. Patricia Sahs ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) ************************************************ Pelin Kurtay, Ph.D. Associate Chair/Associate Professor Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Volgenau School of Engineering George Mason University 4400 University Drive 3100 Nguyen Engineering Building MS 1G5 Fairfax, VA 22030 Tel: 703-993-7606 Fax: 703-993-1601 ************************************************
