With Spring Break just around the corner, I wanted to remind you about a number of exciting (or at least interesting) security-focused events scheduled for the second half of the semester!


Center for Security Policy Studies

  • Distinguished Speaker Series - We had a great turnout for Dr. T.X. Hammes' (terrifying) talk on the future of warfare. We have three other distinguished scholars lined-up to present their work:
    • At 6:00 pm on Tuesday, March 28th, Professor Stephen Biddle (George Washington University) will present his  research on U.S. security force assistance. His talk will be held in Founders Hall Room 111. You can find more information here
    • At 4:30 pm on Friday, April 14th, Professor Stephen Rosen (Harvard University) will discuss the future of nuclear strategy (Founders Hall, room TBD). A no-host happy hour will follow
    • We are finalizing plans to have Professor Jonathan Caverley (Naval War College) speak at the Fairfax campus on Thursday, April 6th. Professor Caverley is an expert on defense politics, militarization and strategy. Details to follow 
  • Crisis simulation - On Saturday, April 1st, CSPS will host its first crisis simulation from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm on the Fairfax campus. Designed to appeal to those interested in political science, foreign policy, history, international security, ROTC, Model UN and intelligence, this simulation will give you first hand experience making and executing strategy under conditions of intense  pressure and uncertainty. I've run a number of these in the past and I promise you that they aren't just for undergrads. You'll have fun and you'll learn something. Trust me. Register here.   • Gettysburg Leadership Tour - CSPS will host its second tour of the Gettysburg Battlefield on Saturday, April 29th. If you like strategy, competitive decision making, military innovation, civil-military relations or U.S. history, this all-day tour, which is free, will be of interest to you. Sign-up instructions to follow after break
  • Student journal/blog - We are excited to unveil our new student blog, The Security Dilemma. Many thanks to Greg Mercer for all his hard work getting this site up and running. Thanks as well to our initial contributors. We created the site to showcase your work on foreign policy, national defense and international security.  So send us your stuff! I-SEC


At 4:30 pm on Friday, April 7th, the I-SEC core faculty will host a 'town hall' style feedback session with graduating students. Although we are particularly interested in hearing from our graduating class (because they've been through the entire curriculum) all I-SEC students are invited to participate. This is your chance to shape the future of the I-SEC program!
