This Week at the Volgenau School
I’m looking forward to some managed chaos in the Atrium this week.
It’s Engineers Week. So our students will be competing and socializing and in general creating a buzz of creativity and energy.
Monday at 1 there is the kick-off social, with our student organizations there to show off their activities. Tuesday at 11 is the egg-drop competition, with
cheers of glory or egg-yolk “tears” at the end of every attempt.
Then there are the events that are more mysterious, at least to me. Wednesday at 1:30 there’s a transportation race, but no one gets to know the details until
the day of the event. Thursday at noon is Marble Madness, which somehow translates the challenges of water distribution into something with a tinge of craziness.
I’m not sure what to expect. But it will be raucous and joyous and irresistible.

Funding Opportunity: Electromagnetic Signaling in Biosystems (DARPA)
Opportunity Title: RadioBio
Sponsor: Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency
Deadline Date: 07-Mar-2017 (optional letter-of-intent), 12-Apr-2017
Program URL:
http://www.grants.gov/custom/viewOppDetails.jsp?oppId=291820
Synopsis: The Defense Sciences Office (DSO) at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is soliciting innovative research proposals that investigate
electromagnetic signaling in biosystems. The RadioBio program aims to definitively establish whether purposeful signaling via electromagnetic waves between biological systems exists and, if it does, determine the mechanisms involved and the information being
transferred. If electromagnetic communications between biosystems exist, then systematic study of the phenomenon may reveal new knowledge. New applications and capabilities in biology may result from this program, in addition to potential new strategies for
dealing with communications in a cluttered electromagnetic environment. The RadioBio program will determine the validity of electromagnetic biosignaling claims and, where evidence exists, learn how the structure and function of these natural “antennas” are
capable of generating and receiving information in a noisy, cluttered electromagnetic environment.

NSF CAREER Program: New Solicitation
URL:
https://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=503214
NSF has released an updated solicitation for its CAREER program.
Although I am not able to point out all the changes in the solicitation, here are two that may be of interest:
ˇ
The eligibility criteria have been broadened to include “tenure track equivalent” positions. The meaning of this is specified in Section IV of the
solicitation.
ˇ
The discussion of Education Activities has been revised to clarify that research and educational activities should be “integrated or synergistic”.
See Sections II.A and V.A of the solicitation.
If you are planning to submit a CAREER proposal, I recommend that you read the solicitation, and pay particular attention to Sections II, V, and VI.A.
