Tried creating a portrayal class and adding lighting in the same way as 3D Balls and Bands and still no joy on Windows - looks better on macOS though. Comparing the 3D Balls and Bands to my own code, nothing really stands out as being that different at this point in terms of how I'm setting the scene up. I'm going to keep plugging away at it, but let me know if you want me to send you a link to the GitHub repository where the code is currently sitting.
