PhD Students:

For the first time, Mason is hosting a 3-Minute Thesis competition (3MT).  It will be held on March 25, 2017, in conjunction with the Mason Graduate Interdisciplinary Conference.  The first prize is $1,000.  The URL for the competition is
    http://provost.gmu.edu/3mtinfo/

I encourage you to consider entering the competition.  Registration opens Friday, December 2, and will be capped at 40 entrants.

3MT is a research communication competition where PhD students present their doctoral research to a non-specialist audience using only one single visual aid—all in three minutes. This exercise encourages graduate students to think about their research from an outsider’s perspective, hones their presentation skills, and provides a forum for a cross-disciplinary exchange of exciting ideas and information.

The competition is suitable for PhD students who have a clear sense of their dissertation topic and have completed some of their dissertation research, but it is not necessary that all the dissertation research be complete, nor is it necessary to have completed the writing of your dissertation.

If you would like to see winning presentations from other universities, you can see examples here: http://threeminutethesis.org/3mt-showcase.

For entrants from the Volgenau School, I plan to organize prep sessions in the Spring semester to help you improve your presentations and get feedback.

If you have additional questions, please let me know.
