Dear friends,
The Office of Sustainability and University Career Services is hosting a Green Jobs Networking Fair on October 12th from 10am-2pm (it was the only date available in Dewberry for the fall when we checked!) So far we have the Environmental Protection Agency,
the US Green Building Council, the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, City of Fairfax, Fairfax County Farmers Market, and the Green Impact Campaign confirmed. We are also talking to The Nature Conservancy, the National Wildlife Federation, and the Sierra Club.
Would you be interested in meeting the representatives from these organizations before the fair starts at 9am? Some of the employers have expressed interest in meeting faculty members to discuss potential ways to collaborate.
Also, if there is a green organization or business that you think would be appealing to our students and you have a contact, please get in touch to coordinate an invitation to them.
Finally, I know some of you keep in touch with a few of our alumni. Our current students get so inspired by their stories so we wanted to do an alumni panel where alumni in the field share their stories about how they got their job. If you know of an alumni
in the sustainability field who has a great story of how they got there, please get in touch with me so we can invite them.
FYI, here are the goals of the Green Jobs Networking Fair if you are interested:
1. Raise awareness of employment opportunities and connect students with local organizations that they may want to apply for employment or volunteer with 2. Provide students with an opportunity for improving networking skills. The event will have panels of
employers organized by topic (energy, policy, conservation, etc). The panels will be an hour long. Each employer will have the opportunity to give a five-minute introduction of their organization, and field questions from students about open positions and
qualifications. Employers will also have a table where students can approach them one-on- one and ask questions while they are not on the panel.
The event is on George Mason University's Fairfax campus. Parking expenses will be covered and snacks and beverages will be provided.
Thanks so much,
Margaret
