Events in Orlando, Florida

George Mason students, faculty and staff come from across the country and around the world. When a mass tragedy occurs, our university family is bound to be affected.

The shooting attack at an Orlando, Fla., gay nightclub early Sunday that resulted in at least 50 deaths and 53 injuries is no exception. Mason has students from Florida, and many of us have relatives and friends in that area. We extend our thoughts and deepest sympathy to the victims and their loved ones.

Each of us responds differently when faced with trauma or tragedy. One thing we all share in common at Mason – no matter where we might be spending the summer – is the ability to seek and receive support through our many campus resources.

We offer assistance through the offices of University Life, including Counseling and Psychological Services. University Life resources can be accessed at http://ulife.gmu.edu<http://ulife.gmu.edu/>. Faculty or staff may contact Employee Relations for support at (703) 993-3878. Faculty and staff resources are also available through the Employee Assistance Program, which may be accessed through your employer-sponsored health insurance. Details are on the Human Resources and Payroll website at http://hr.gmu.edu.<http://hr.gmu.edu/>

The mass shooting took place at Latin Night at Pulse, a gay nightclub, during the time of LGBTQ Pride celebrations across the country, and during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Members of our LGBTQ communities, and especially LGBTQ Latino/as and Muslims, are devastated by this hateful act.

We offer our LGBTQ students, faculty and staff our full support and additional resources at http://lgbtq.gmu.edu/. We also stand with our Muslim community at Mason against anti-Muslim bigotry. Let us not assign blame to individuals or groups beyond the shooter; let us not allow this to turn communities against one another.

During challenging times, when we’re trying to make sense of the senseless, we must come together to offer each other a helping hand and seek the support that we need as we strive for a more peaceful world.

Sincerely yours,

Rose Pascarell, Vice President, University Life

S. David Wu, Provost and Executive Vice President

Help BIS 490 Student's Research Project
[cid:imageid7]

BIS students and alumni are invited to participate in a research study titled “Synchronous Distance Learning Implementation” conducted by BIS student Tyler Whidby. This research is being conducted by Tyler in support of his BIS490 capstone project investigating the current use, and future implementation of, online learning technologies.

The survey includes questions about your online educational experiences and use of videoconference technologies. The survey should take approximately 10 minutes and is anonymous. Results of the survey will be presented with Tyler’s final Capstone paper at the Summer 2016 BIS Capstone Presentations. Your assistance is encouraged both because it is an important part of Tyler’s project and because it will help BIS learn more about student use of/attitudes toward online learning and may have an impact on the development of future courses.

Concurso de Tinku

Date: June 25, 2016
Time: 5:00 PM
Location: Center for the Arts

Tinku, is a folkloric dance from the Andean region of Potosi, Bolivia that means "encounter". It's a yearly tradition where thousands of villagers gather in the towns of Potosi for several days to take part of this celebration. Two opposite groups come together one called, "Aransayas" (from the high lands) and the other called "Urinsayas" (from the low lands) for a combat-like-gathering. There one side is left standing as the winner to celebrate life and appreciate mother earth, the "Pachamana".

This folkloric dance from Bolivia mesmerizes the audience by the colorful outfits, the thundering music, and the lively dancing.
