Interact with Global PR Leaders

By Johanna Escobar, George Mason University, Class of 2015

There is more than Big Ben and the London Eye on the horizon for George Mason University’s Center for Global Education’s PR in London winter study abroad program<http://globaled.gmu.edu/programs/facultyled/winterstudy/londonPR.html?utm_source=Newsletter&utm_medium=Email&utm_content=fa15-PRSSA&utm_campaign=fa15-PRSSA>. After leading the program for the past 12 years, Professor Michael G. Dickerson is stepping down. In 2016, Professor Suzanne Lowery Mims (@mimsPR), will transition into her new role as the program’s director. “I am honored and excited to take over leadership of this program,” Professor Mims says,.“ I only hope I can fill the huge shoes left by Professor Dickerson and continue to make this a valuable experience for students.” Known for her experience in advertising in addition to public relations, Professor Mims wants to attract students interested in various industries. “The program<http://globaled.gmu.edu/programs/facultyled/winterstudy/londonPR.html?utm_source=Newsletter&utm_medium=Email&utm_content=fa15-PRSSA&utm_campaign=fa15-PRSSA> puts students a fast-track to seeing PR in action in business, nonprofits and government,” Professor Mims explained. “We also get a behind-the-scenes look at PR in sports, fashion and entertainment.”

Why London, why now?

London is known for its history, diversity and for being a business hub. The cultural experience that anyone can gain from being in London itself is invaluable. But, for a college student trying to outweigh the costs versus the benefits of studying abroad—the numbers alone can be scary. Still, Mason students should not outright discard the possibility to study abroad as the experience can truly be invaluable to young, rising public relations professionals.

For Kenia Zelaya, a junior studying public relations who joined the two-week 2015 trip to London, her experience abroad further solidified her desire to go into crisis management.

“One of the agency executives spoke about crisis management, and it just clicked—I wrote down crisis management in my notes and a cloud bubble around it.” --- Kenia Zelaya

Kenia’s realization came during a presentation at Ketchum, one of the world’s largest PR firms.

Over the course of the program<http://globaled.gmu.edu/programs/facultyled/winterstudy/londonPR.html?utm_source=Newsletter&utm_medium=Email&utm_content=fa15-PRSSA&utm_campaign=fa15-PRSSA>, students see all sides of public relations by visiting and meeting with large, international firms such as Edelman, Ketchum, Hill + Knowlton Strategies and Bell Pottinger as well as smaller firms like LivePR, which handles the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority. In addition, students visited the BBC, the London Telegraph, Northrop Grumman, the Royal Aeronautic Society, and the Churchill Museum, plus enjoyed a day trip to Canterbury in the English countryside.

For Mason students, studying abroad is not just a great cultural and educational experience that no class on campus will offer, but earning three credits toward their Spring semester is just another added bonus!
