Special Collections & Archives (SC&A) has an opening in public services for an Archival Assistant (position #114348) to assist SC&A staff in providing services to researchers, and working with manuscripts and archival collections. We are looking for a responsible, engaged, detail-oriented graduate student with an interest in working with historical collections and helping the public.

 

Archival Assistant, 18.5 hours / week ($9.18/hr) will be stationed at the front desk to assist with public services, duplication/reproduction requests, finding and reshelving collection materials, and processing and describing historical manuscripts and George Mason University collections. The assistant may also create and update finding aids using Encoded Archival Description (EAD) and Archivists’ Toolkit. Duties include monitoring the reading room, paging and shelving collections, conducting digital outreach through social media, and other projects as assigned. Ability to lift boxes weighing up to 35 lbs., climb ladders, and reach shelves required. Basic computer skills and strong communication skills needed; work experience in an archival setting, mark-up languages, and Microsoft Access are desirable. Preference will be given to candidates who can work through the 2015-2016 academic year.
