The Department of History of Duke University and its Graduate Students are pleased to invite their peers in the humanities and social sciences to submit papers to their annual conference, entitled Staging Sovereignty: Knowledge, Narratives, and Spaces of Governance, to be held Friday, October 23, 2015, at Duke University.

The conference will try to put in conversation the concept of sovereignty in its traditional political conception with more recent approaches which problematize and displace the concept itself. We are interested in assembling thematic workshop-panels, in which papers covering a broad spectrum of perspectives, approaches, and disciplines, geographically and chronologically diverse, interact with each other.

Due to the nature of the conference, we encourage graduate students to apply and submit their works in progress or at an early stage.

We are welcoming works which focus on history, geography, science, technology, gender, ethnicity, labor, capitalism, the body, political theory, as well as many others.

The conference will consist of workshop panels organized around specific topics. Each panel will have a discussant who will present a short critique to the works and lead the following discussion. After the discussions of all the panels, will follow a lecture given by the keynote speaker.

Please submit a 250-word abstract of your paper including title and affiliation by August 20, 2015 to Erasmo Castellani at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>. Those selected will be notified by August 30, 2015.
