I am forwarding the following email from the Office of Research, Integrity & Assurance (ORIA). Dean Ball would appreciate your cooperation with ORIA. Thank you, Dear Faculty, Last fall, the Office of Research Integrity & Assurance (ORIA) held several export compliance training sessions. Thank you to those who were able to attend these sessions. Your questions and feedback during the training were appreciated and will help Mason to continue improving its export compliance program. As promised during the training, attached is a copy of the presentation. It is also available on the ORIA website (http://oria.gmu.edu/export-control/). For faculty at the BRL and elsewhere where biologic items are in use, the link below (also attached as a PDF) provides guidance that we discussed during the training sessions. We hope that it will be particularly helpful. http://www.bis.doc.gov/index.php/policy-guidance/product-guidance/chemical-and-biological-controls/14-policy-guidance/deemed-exports/111-deemed-export-and-fundamental-research-for-biological-items As you know, Mason now requires export compliance training for all COS and VSE faculty members and researchers, including research assistants and appropriate staff. (Adjunct faculty need only be included if they work on research or supervise student research.) To comply with these requirements and provide you with the most flexibility, we are offering several training sessions during the Spring semester, as well as, online training. The classroom training sessions are as follows: Wednesday, February 18, 2015, 1:00-1:45 pm (Research Hall 163) Tuesday, March 3, 2015, 10:00-10:45 am (Research Hall 163) Thursday, March 26, 2015, 12:00-12:45 pm (Research Hall 163) Monday, April 13, 2015, 2:00-2:45 pm (Research Hall 163) Thursday, April 23, 2015, 9:00-9:45 am (Research Hall 163) In addition to the personal training, we developed a webinar that allows faculty, staff, and students to complete the training at their own convenience. The 25-minute webinar is the same as the in-person sessions. Both the in-person training and the webinar address rules associated with all international travel (laptops and data), as well as, digital communications to and from students (who may be in international locations during winter and summer breaks.) This training also addresses the economic sanctions and restrictions placed on foreign nationals participating in export-controlled research projects. Mason's export-controlled projects increased in 2014, and we expect that research to continue to grow. Even fundamental research is affected by recent critical changes to federal regulations. If you would like to view the webinar rather than attend in-person training, you can access it via My Mason. Here's how: Login. * Click on "Organizations" on the top right of the screen. * You will see "Export Control Training" under the heading. * Click on "Export Control Training" to access. If you do not see "Export Control Training," type "export" in the Organization Search box and follow these instructions: You will see "AU_Provost_ExportControl" under Organization ID. * Move your curser over "AU_Provost_ExportControl" and a down arrow will appear. * Click on Enroll, then Click Submit on this screen, then OK on the next. This will enroll you in the training. To be credited with completion of the webinar, you will need to answer three basic questions at the end. Once you have answered them, the system will automatically record your training, and you may print a certificate of completion. If you have questions about the in-person training or webinar content, please contact Shannon MacMichael at 703-993-2308, Melissa Perez at 703-993-5522, or [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.
