Subject: April 24 - 1st Annual Volgenau School of Engineering Undergraduate Research Celebration
Volgenau School Faculty,
On Thursday, April 24, the Volgenau School of Engineering will hold our first annual Undergraduate Research Celebration, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the Mason Inn. Please attend if you can, and please encourage your students to participate
or attend. And if you have a Thursday evening class, you’re welcome to bring them. The poster session is 5:00-7:00, followed by two student keynote speakers and then an award ceremony.
I’ve attached below the message that is going out to the students. As you can see, we’re interested in all kinds of student projects. If you have undergraduate research students, please encourage them to participate, but this is also a
great forum for practice presentations for class projects, for example.
Please contact me if you have any questions. Thanks, and hope to see you there!

Subject: VSE Undergraduate Research Celebration - Call for proposals, deadline 4/4
The first annual Volgenau School of Engineering Undergraduate Research Celebration will be held on Thursday, April 24, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, at the Mason Inn. This is
a great opportunity for VSE students to showcase their research and scholarship for the school and university community. If you have completed a research or scholarly project, or have one in progress, please consider participating in the poster session.
Cash prizes of $250 will be awarded for the five most outstanding projects. Judging will be done by representatives of local employers. There will also be a special “People’s Choice Award”
voted on by all attendees.
Presenters of winning projects will be invited to participate in the university’s 2014 Celebration of Student Scholarship on May 6, and your work will be displayed in the Engineering
Building.
All kinds of research, design, and scholarly work in our school are welcome. Projects can be individual or group projects, and can include research projects with a faculty mentor, course
projects at any level (anything from ENGR 107 through senior capstone projects), student organization activities, or even research done at an outside internship.
The OSCAR office can help you create your poster. There’s a lot of helpful information at
http://oscar.gmu.edu/students/student-toolbox.cfm including upcoming poster workshops on March 20, April 8, and April 10.
You may also submit your project to be considered for an oral keynote presentation; presenters of the two keynotes will each receive an honorarium of $100.
Only VSE students can present at the celebration, but the event is open to the entire university community. Please encourage your friends to participate and attend. Remember, all attendees
will be able to vote for the People’s Choice Award. Light refreshments will be provided.
The
deadline to submit proposals for inclusion in the VSE Undergraduate Research Celebration is Friday,
April 4. Proposals need to include a title and abstract of the project. Please submit your proposal at
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/5KGXQF2. You will be notified via email by Wednesday, April 9 if your poster is accepted. Award decisions will be made during the poster session, and the celebration will
conclude with an award ceremony.
Please feel free to contact my assistant, Susan Brionez ([log in to unmask]) if you have any questions.
