Monumental
Power:
Mourning and Memory in Greece and Rome
Starting in Greece with the Acropolis and Parthenon, examine the political stakes of mourning, memorials, and memory. After two
weeks in Greece, head for Italy where you will examine the monumental architecture of classical Rome for two weeks. Contemporary topics and memorials like the Lincoln Memorial, Gettysburg, and the fight over the ‘sacred ground’ of the 9/11 memorial, will
be incorporated to provide a view over time of the different ways that republics and empires have attempted to memorialize and mourn traumatic public events. How do these monuments demonstrate the political stakes and the importance of public responses to
death and mourning? You will be encourage to think about the connections between politics, culture, and mourning, in a manner that makes use of multi-disciplinary materials from economics, humanities, literature, and film.

and Myanmar:
Visualizing a Post-Conflict World
This summer
study abroad program offers students a first hand look at two countries that have emerged from prolonged periods of conflict - Vietnam, roiled by decades of war with France, the US and China and Myanmar (Burma), where many ethnic groups experienced oppression
under the country’s long-ruling military leaders. Now,Vietnam is
a country of growing prosperity and Myanmar held
its first free elections in 2011. The environmental and economic legacies of conflict have played out very differently in each country and students will have direct contact with both situations.

Credit in Milan
During this four-week
faculty-led course, students will travel to Milan, Italy and will immerse themselves in Italian media, culture and society. They will experience how it interrelates to culture and society as they have experienced it in the United States. Students will
attend daily lectures given by Italian and American faculty on specific topics and will then visit appropriate sights in Italy. Students will also get to visit the largest newspaper in Italy; learn to cook authentic Italian food in Lake Como; visit an Abbey
with 900 year-old art; visit a lake overlooking the Alps; go to Turin and visit the National Museum of Cinema; learn what fashion is and what being fashionable means.

World
War I in Europe
World War I dramatically changed the course of the 20th and 21st centuries. The war’s magnitude of material destruction, staggering loss of lives and the coercive civilian enlistment efforts by governments, together with the combatant nations’ use of censorship,
military mobilization, rationing and propaganda were unprecedented. Students will retrace the path of the Great War starting in Vienna, Austria and ending in Paris, France during this four week long course. They
will also visit over 25 historical sites and museums and 4 of the Western Front battlefields.
