Subject: Changes to MASONLIVE for Students Have Begun

Dear MASONLIVE e-mail student user:

The upgrade of the MASONLIVE mail system from Live@EDU to Office 365 has begun. Your e-mail address will not change as a result of this upgrade. The ITU will notify you once this upgrade has been completed. You can continue to use e-mail, SkyDrive, and Messenger throughout the upgrade.

What should I do?
  1. Make sure you have updated your security and personal information with Microsoft. This will allow you to reset your MASONLIVE Microsoft Password if you need to during or after the upgrade. You can also add another e-mail address to your MASONLIVE account.
  2. Make sure you know/set your MASONLIVE Microsoft Password. This will allow you to access your SkyDrive, Messenger, and other Microsoft services as outlined below, as well as to push/pull your e-mail to another location such as your mobile phone (iPhone, Droid, etc.), other e-mail account (gmail, etc.) or mail client (Outlook).
What will happen during this upgrade?

Microsoft will split your MASONLIVE account into two separate accounts with the same user name and password that you currently use to access MASONLIVE.
  1. Office 365 MASONLIVE account  - This account gives you access to your Mason student e-mail. George Mason University administers this account.
  2. Personal Microsoft account  - This personal account will give you access to all your existing SkyDrive content, Messenger, and other Microsoft services. Note that George Mason University no longer administers this account. As a result, we cannot reset the password for you.
What can you expect after the upgrade?

•    E-mail:

You will continue to use Microsoft Outlook Web App (OWA) via masonlive.gmu.edu or the mail client of your choosing (Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.) to view and send e-mail. You will no longer be able to use outlook.com or live.com to view or send e-mail.

•    Branding:
The new Outlook Web Application (OWA) does not provide links to commonly used websites at Mason.  In addition, the OWA is branded with Microsoft’s Office 365 logo, not Mason branding.

•    File sharing:
If you use SkyDrive you will now only be able to access your SkyDrive account by going to skydrive.live.com. Reminder: George Mason University no longer administers your SkyDrive account.

•    URL Redirection:
When you navigate to the URL for Outlook Web App, you may be redirected to an Outlook Live sign in page or an Office 365 sign in page.

Please visit masonlive.gmu.edu/overview.html for detailed instructions for how to update your security information with Microsoft as well as special instructions for students who use Internet Explorer 6, 7 and 8 as well as Outlook 2003.

As a reminder, the ITU Support Center will not be able to assist with MASONLIVE account issues or password changes for mobile devices or mail clients (Outlook, Thunderbird, pulling mail into Gmail, etc.) until the upgrade process is complete.  The e-mail upgrade could take as long as a week.

Please contact us with any questions or concerns you may have.
