Asian Division, Library of Congress is pleas resentation by Mr. Gao Ertai on May 24, 2013 at the Library of Congress. Mr. Gao's talk (in Chinese with English translation) is a reflection of his view on the transformation of Buddhist works in Dunhuang as well as Chinese history, culture, and literature.

The works by and on Mr. Gao will be displayed at Asian Division Reading Room (LJ-150) during the event.

Mr. Gao Ertai (b. 1935) is a renowned and accomplished Chinese aestheticist, artist, poet and philosopher. He has resided with his wife in Las Vegas since 1992.

Before immig rating t Gao taught aesthetics and philosophy at Lanzhou University, Sichuan Normal University, Nankai University and Nanking University; he also did research work at the Dunhuang Institute of Cultural Relics and the Institute of Philosophy of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. He received awards from the PRC State Science and Technology Commission and the Beijing Institute of Contemporary Chinese in 1986 and 2007 respectively.

Mr. Gao has written numerous influential publications, including On Beauty (1956), "a free-thinking, idealistic treatise on aesthetics" stating that "freedom [is] essential to the creation of beauty, and that beauty [is] an expression of freedom."  In Search of My Homeland, his latest work, is widely acclaimed as monumental work that records his experience in Chinese labor ca lude: Beauty: a Symbol of Freedom, Struggle of Beauty, On Alienation, Absoluteness of Beauty, Human Nature, The Pursuit of Beauty and Human Emancipation.
