Hello colleagues,

Please forward the announcements below to your networks/listservs of 
graduate and professional students. In an effort to provide timely and 
relevant news to graduate students, I plan to compile announcements from 
central offices that serve all graduate students on a monthly basis and 
ask for your assistance in disseminating the information.

In addition, I will continue to send out a mass email to all Fairfax 
graduate students twice per semester. In preparation for those messages, 
I will send out a "call for announcements" to you to solicit news you 
wish to share with this population. The next mass email will be 
distributed in late March; I'll be soliciting announcements starting 
next week.

Thank you for your assistance! Please let me know if you have any 
questions or comments. Your feedback will be helpful as we develop a 
comprehensive communications strategy for Graduate Student Life.

1. GSC Coffee Break: Wednesday, March 6, 4:00-7:00pm
Join Graduate Student Life at the Graduate Student Center on the third 
floor of the JC for a coffee break the first Wednesday of the month! 
Come meet fellow graduate students, see our space, hang out, and (most 
importantly) fuel up before class! We'll provide coffee (regular and 
decaf), hot tea, bagels, and coffee cake. Also mark your calendars for 
the next GSC Coffee Breaks on April 3 and May 1!

2. Graduate and Professional Student Etiquette Dinner: Friday, March 22,

Founders Multipurpose Room, Arlington Campus
Learn appropriate tools and techniques for professional networking. Come 
hear from presenters who held key protocol positions with the State 
Department and the Library of Congress. Hors d'oeuvres and dinner 
provided. A cash bar will be available. Seats are limited, so register 
now! Mason graduate and professional students only -- this event cannot 
accommodate guests. Cost is $15. Register online now at

3. Preparing for Careers in the Academy: Applications for 2013-2014 
Cohort Available
Applications are now available for the Preparing for Careers in the 
Academy program offered by the Center for Teaching and Faculty 
Excellence. This program helps advanced PhD students and MFA students to 
prepare for future academic careers by developing teaching and mentoring 
expertise, drafting important components of the academic job 
application, and exploring different types of academic careers. In the 
fall semester participants will enroll in a one-credit course that meets 
every other Friday, for a total of seven three-hour sessions as well as 
an online discussion forum. In the spring semester participants will 
take part in an online discussion forum and will receive individualized 
mentoring. Admission to the 2013-14 program is competitive and requires 
an application. Applications are due electronically to the Center for 
Teaching and Faculty Excellence ([log in to unmask]) by Monday, April 1, 
2013.  A letter of support from the dissertation or thesis project

4. GAPSA Elections: Candidate Applications Available Friday, March 8
Graduate students interested in having their voices heard should get 
involved with the Graduate and Professional Student Association (GAPSA) 
at Mason. As graduate students you represent at large portion of the 
population, and we want to make sure you're being represented. This is 
your opportunity to be around the table with peers and administrators in 
order to create more of a graduate student experience at Mason! 
Candidate applications will be available starting Friday, March 8 and 
are due Friday, March 29. Voting will be held April 2-4. For the full 
elections timeline, candidate applications, and more information, visit

5. Save the Date for Graduate Student Appreciation Week: April 1-5
Thanks to Mason's graduate students for all that they do! Take advantage 
of an array of events, activities, and free food opportunities 
specifically for graduate students throughout the week! More information 
will be forthcoming from the Graduate and Professional Student 
Association and Graduate Student Life.
 
6. Journal of Mason Graduate Research Call for Papers Coming
The Journal of Mason Graduate Research (JMGR) will make its first Call 
for Papers soon for its initial edition. The JMGR plans to publish its 
first edition, themed "Innovations in Higher Education," in November 
2013. The JMGR hopes to provide Mason graduate students with 
opportunities to engage in positive collaborative leadership through the 
peer review and publication processes.
 
7. Upcoming Referendum on GAPSA Organizational Re-structuring
GAPSA will be putting forth a referendum in the next week or two 
addressing proposed changes on the way GAPSA is structured. Keep an eye 
out for this referendum coming soon.
