Motor Neuron Regulation of Adult Myogenesis in Drosophila

During the Drosophila life cycle, two distinct sets of muscles develop: the embryonic and adult muscles. Embryonic muscles function in hatching and grow in size through the larval stage during which they aid in locomotory behaviors. At the onset of metamorphosis, these muscles are replaced by an adult set, whose development is influenced by motor neurons, a feature absent form embryonic myogenesis, but with parallels in vertebrate myogenesis. My lab has been interested in identifying the mechanisms by which motor neurons regulate myogenesis. A working model includes the innervating neurons acting through mesodermal organizer cells to regulate fusion and proliferation, possibly using the EGF signaling pathway.
