These algorithms typically converge to a single solution because of the global selection scheme used. Nevertheless, many real-world problems are “multimodal” by nature, i.e., multiple satisfactory solutions exist. It may be desirable to locate many such satisfactory solutions so that a decision maker can choose one that is most proper in his/her problem domain. Numerous techniques have been developed in the past for locating multiple optima (global or local). These techniques are commonly referred to as “niching” methods. A niching method can be incorporated into a standard EA to promote and maintain formation of multiple stable subpopulations within a single population, with an aim to locate multiple globally optimal or suboptimal solutions. Many niching methods have been developed in the past, including crowding, fitness sharing, derating, restricted tournament selection, clearing, speciation, etc. ================= Important Dates ================ - Paper Submission: 15 February 2013 - Decision Notification: 8 April 2013 - Final Paper Submission: 26 April 2013 ******************************************************************************** Sender: [log in to unmask] Subject: CEC Special Session on Evolutionary Algorithms for Cloud Computing Systems *CALL FOR PAPERS* Special Session : Evolutionary algorithms for Cloud computing systems 2013 IEEE Congress on Evolutionary Computation (CEC 2013) June 20-23, Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach Hotel, Cancún, México http://cec2013.org/ Cloud computing systems represent an emerging technology which allows users to pay as you need using high performance computing systems. However, in recent years, hybrid metaheuristics have attracted a growing interest. In this new class of algorithms, a smart combination of concepts and techniques from different optimization methods is used. We propose to focus this session on the hybridization of metaheuristics with artificial intelligence techniques, and more generally with any technique that can provide learning or predictive capabilities to an optimization algorithm. A particular interest will be given to the evaluation of their performances and to their applications. ** Important Dates ** 1 March 2013 - ABSTRACT SUBMISSION DEADLINE 15 March 2013 - NOTIFICATION OF ACCEPTANCE/REJECTION TO AUTHORS 15 April 2013 - DEADLINE FOR AUTHORS REGISTRATION 1-4 July 2013 - EURO 2013 Conference in Rome, Italy ******************************************************************************** Sender: [log in to unmask] Subject: ECAL 2013 - European Conference on Artificial Life - 2-6 September, 2013 Taormina, Italy First CALL FOR PAPERS: ECAL 2013 ECAL 2013, European Conference on Artificial Life, an International Conference on the Simulation and Synthesis of Living Systems 2-6 September 2013, Taormina, Italy http://www.dmi.unict.it/ecal2013/ ===================== Researchers are invited to submit original work in the field of artificial life, synthetic biology, living systems, and complex systems as papers of not more than 8 pages. A diversity of concepts under the rubrics of evolvability and robustness have been introduced as the literature on these subjects has expanded. This special issue is open to the full range of these concepts. However, confusion has entered the literature due to imprecise usage of these terms. Therefore, a unique requirement for this special issue will be that the authors provide precise quantitative definitions for the aspects of ‘evolvability’ and ‘robustness’ they investigate. Examples of topics sought include: • The emergence, or the engineering, of evolvability or robustness into artificial evolutionary systems (AESs); • New theoretical understanding of the evolution of evolvability, robustness, neutral networks, and their inter-relationships; • Case studies of the evolution of evolvability, robustness, or neutral networks in AESs; • Methodology for measuring evolvability and/or robustness; • Relationships between 1) the robustness of the AES’s behavior to variation in inputs and environment, and 2) its robustness under change from the genetic operators (e.g. ‘plasto-genetic congruence’ Ancel and Fontana (2000)); • Mechanisms whereby variational properties of the environment or inputs can shape the variational properties of the AESs under the genetic operators; • Generalization of the biological concept of distribution of mutation effects on fitness to the distribution of genetic operator effects on the objective functions in AESs (Nordin and Banzhaf, 1995). Important Dates: Submission deadline: April 30, 2013. Notification of acceptance: June 30, 2013. Final manuscript: August 31, 2013.
