GREAT CITIES: A Journey to Post-Communism: Berlin, Budapest, Belgrade, Sarajevo
Participants will have the opportunity to examine political, economic, social, and cultural developments in post-communist, East-Central Europe. By visiting four countries - Germany, Hungary, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina – students will be able to observe the tremendous transformation of East-Central Europe since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. History in this region is not merely confined to dusty books in libraries; the burden of history seems to resonate in the lives of individuals and plays a key role in the formation of a collective identity within each society in the region. By walking the streets of these magnificent European cities, visiting relevant sites, and talking to locals, participating students should be able to develop an appreciation of what is meant by “the burden of history” in East-Central Europe.

Interested students can contact Denise Elles-Mdahuar, [log in to unmask] or 703-993-2155, for further information.  The application deadline for this program is  October 5th, 2012.

Many have visited the famous Trevi Fountain in Rome, but how many people do you know who have explored Rome, below the Trevi Fountain? You could have this very opportunity if you participate in this study abroad program, which will literally take you underneath the streets and buildings of Rome! The goal for this program is to develop an appreciation of how the interplay of the territory and culture brought life to Rome. What is seen on the surface of the city is not even half of the rich historical and cultural heritage of Rome: underneath her very varied topography, the city unfolds her past. This interdisciplinary course uses geoarcheology as a gateway to the support of archeological, historical, and anthropological studies of the city and her development.
