Summer
employment for an information school student interested in digital
imaging,
document preservation and heritage data recovery is available. The
student will
be working with an international team of scientists, archivists and
historians
on a novel digitization project at the US National Archives focused on
the
retrieval of weather and environmental observations contained in
original ship
logbooks. Data extraction will be crowd-sourced (www.oldweather.org), integrated into global
data sets,
and used to drive advanced reanalysis systems for climate research.
Some
experience with digital imaging, metadata management or historical
document
handling and preservation is desirable. This position is for 30-40
hours per
week at National Archives 1, Washington D.C. A National Archives and
Records
Administration (NARA) background check is required. This is an
approximately 14
week temporary opportunity with a potential extension into the academic
