WHAT THE PENTAGON WILL KEEP AS IT CUTS
Specifics of where DoD will find $489 billion in planned cuts over the next decade ($263 billion in the next five years) have not been released. But the broad strategy laid out this week by President Obama and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta (left) underscored some of what would not be cut. Panetta said: "We will protect, and in some cases increase, our investments in special operations forces, in new technologies like ISR (intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance) and unmanned systems, in space -- and, in particular, in cyberspace -- capabilities . . . ." Deputy Secretary Ashton Carter mentioned protecting "aspects of our science and technology investments . . . (and) critical investments in wounded warrior care." He described science, technology and innovation as "the seed corn of the future. We want to make sure we don't eat the seed corn."
