Since 1888,
scholars have been wrestling with the Shakespeare authorship
mystery. Hollywood has just this year weighed in with its
version in the movie Anonymous. Kreeger Museum founder
David Kreeger’s lifelong passion for Shakespeare turned him
into a modern sleuth when he joined the search for the truth
about the author of the greatest plays in the English
language. He financed the September 1987 appellate court
session which was heard by Supreme Court Justices Brennan,
Blackmun and Stevens and attended by over a thousand people –
trying to weigh the cases of the two strongest claimants, the
Stratfordians vs. the Oxfordians. In writing a forward for the record of
the “Authorship of Shakespeare on Trial,” Kreeger expressed
the hope that “the passage of the centuries should not deter
further research.” Just over 24 years have passed since then,
and the museum that bears his name and exhibits his art
collection will host, on January 19th, a revisiting of the
case.
This program –
titled The Mystery of Shakespeare – is open to the
public, and will take place, 6:30-8 p.m. on Thursday, January
19, in the Great Hall of The Kreeger Museum.
The format
will be that of a dialogue between Peter and Syril Kline who,
as scholars, have been pursuing the arguments in the
authorship debate for many years and are now prepared to
present information they have uncovered regarding mistakes
that were made by earlier researchers. They are hoping that
the audience/witnesses will engage in this lively dialogue –
with them and each other. A complete set of the records from
the September 25, 1987 moot court event and will also be on
exhibit that evening. A light English pub style reception will
follow in the Monet Gallery of the museum.
We hope you
will be able to attend this event and share this information
with your students and colleagues!
