CLIR Grant Research Assistant
Special Collections and Archives, University Libraries

Special Collections and Archives (SC&A) is seeking a graduate student to assist with the description, cataloging, and preservation of over 7,000 East German posters as part of a Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) grant.  The posters document film, art exhibits, performing arts, politics, propaganda, and various festivals, sports, and recreational events.  This poster collection is a unique scholarly resource that provides a window into the artistic, cultural, and political activities of the former DDR. They are important as visual and textual primary resources for research in the humanities and social sciences. A great deal of interest in the DDR has been generated by the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 2009  and the 25th of its construction in 2011, as well as the 20th anniversary of German reunification in 2010. No comparable collection of this size and depth exists in the U.S. or German research libraries.

Applicants must be proficient in reading German and have knowledge of 20th-century German and European history and art history.  Preferred qualifications include experience in library and archives work, particularly cataloging, databases, and markup languages.  The grant-funded position will begin in June 2011 and last until December 2011, so preference will be given to applicants that can make a commitment for the full time period, including the summer.  Compensation will be $20/hour for 20 hours/week.

Interested students must apply through HireMason:

Job posting closes on May 25th.
