EC friends,
The purpose of this posting is to let my colleagues in the community
of evolutionary computation know that as of 31 May 2011, the Illinois
Genetic Algorithms laboratory at the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign will be completely shut down and closed. The website
of the lab will continue and tech reports and code produced during the
nearly 21 year existence of the lab are now and will continue to be
available at www.illigal.org.
Some of you know that as 31 December 2010, I retired from full-time
teaching and research at the UIUC to devote my energies to the
transformation of engineering education by starting a consulting and
leadership coaching firm called ThreeJoy Associates, Inc
(www.threejoy.com). Over the next year, I have part-time or visiting
positions at Illinois, the National University of Singapore, and
TUDelft, and I look forward to staying in touch with my many friends
and colleagues in the GA/EC community.
Although my major commitments going forward are outside of the field,
I remain firmly convinced of the importance of evolutionary
computation, steadfastly supportive of the community's efforts, and
forever grateful for having been given the chance to have so much fun
for so many years with so many great people.

Abstract
This is a survey of the field of Genetics-based Machine Learning
(GBML): the application of evolutionary algorithms to machine
learning. We assume readers are familiar with evolutionary algorithms
and their application to optimisation problems, but not necessarily
with machine learning. We briefly outline the scope of machine
learning, introduce the more specific area of supervised learning,
contrast it with optimisation and present arguments for and against
GBML. Next we introduce a framework for GBML which includes ways of
classifying GBML algorithms and a discussion of the interaction
between learning and evolution. We then review the following areas
with emphasis on their evolutionary aspects: GBML for sub-problems of
learning, genetic programming, evolving ensembles, evolving neural
networks, learning classifier systems, and genetic fuzzy systems.

Description
Randomized search heuristics such as stochastic gradient methods,
simulated annealing, evolutionary algorithms, stochastic neural
networks for optimization, ant colony and swarm optimization, and the
cross-entropy method are frequently used across many scientific
communities. They have been successfully applied in various domains,
both for combinatorial and numerical optimization. Despite their
success in practice, proving that such algorithms satisfy certain
performance guarantees is still a difficult and widely open problem.
The mission of the ThRaSH workshop series is to contribute to the
theoretical understanding of randomized search heuristics, in
particular of their computational complexity. The aim is to stimulate
interactions within the research field and between people from
different disciplines working on randomized algorithms. The primary
focus is on discussing recent ideas and detecting challenging topics
for future work, rather than on the presentation of final results.

Two introductory tutorials will be given by experts in the field:

Submission of Abstracts
Technical talks by researchers working on various aspects of the
theory of randomised search heuristics will follow the
tutorials. Researchers working on theoretical aspects of randomised
search heuristics are invited to submit proposals for a talk in form
of a short abstract (one single page) to

We invite presentations of ongoing work and new ideas. Previously
published work new to the ThRaSH community can be presented, however,
material accepted at some conference or workshop closely before or
after ThRaSH should not be the focus of a talk. As there will be no
printed proceedings, there are no copyright problems.
The decision about whether the proposed talk is accepted for the
workshop program will be made within two weeks after the submission
has been received.

Venue
The City of Angers is located on the Western Edge of France, in the
area of Loire Valley (Vallée de la Loire), which is part of UNESCO
world heritage. From Paris, Angers can be reached easily by the TGV
(High Speed Train) in one and half hour. It can also be reached from
the City of Nantes by train in 40 minutes (Nantes Atlantic Airport is
30 minutes away from Nantes railway station).

NICSO 2011 is the fifth edition of the International Workshop on
Nature Inspired Cooperative Strategies for Optimization and aims at
promoting deeper investigations on cooperative problem solving
strategies and bringing together international researchers and
practitioners from different disciplines to exchange ideas about
emerging new research areas. Biological and other natural processes
have always been a source of inspiration for computer science and
information technology. We seek contributions that are inspired by
Nature and that encompass a range of spatio-temporal scales, for
visionary conceptions of information processing and computation as
pertaining to cooperation mechanisms in the context of problem
solving.
Submitted papers will undergo a rigorous blind peer review process.
Selection criteria will be based on relevance, originality,
significance, impact, technical soundness and quality of the
presentation. Contributions are expected to provide original results,
insights and experimental innovations. Manuscripts must be in PDF, not
exceeding 12 pages and conforming to the Latex template at the
Springer's Instructions for Authors page. Contributions are welcome to
submission through the system available at

editions, the accepted papers will be published in the book series on
Studies in Computational Intelligence (Springer). Authors of a

should not exceed fifteen (15) pages in length and must be formatted

submitted in PDF and will not be accepted in any other format. Papers
that exceed 15 pages or do not follow the LNCS guidelines risk being
rejected automatically without a review. More information and

The submissions will be peer reviewed by at least three members of the
Programme Committee. The reviewing process is double blind, so authors
should remove names and affiliations from the submitted papers, and
must take reasonable care not to indirectly disclose their identity.
References to own work can be included in the paper, but should be
referred to in the third person.
The authors of accepted papers will have to improve their paper on the
basis of the recommendations from the reviewers and will be asked to
send a camera ready version of their manuscripts. Even though the
submissions can be made in PDF (preferable) or PS, we encourage
authors to prepare their papers in TEX or LATEX because these are more
convenient source formats for the camera ready final version. At least
one author of each accepted work must register for the conference and
present the work.
Accepted papers will be presented orally or as posters. The best
accepted papers will appear in the proceedings published by Springer
in the Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence (LNAI), a subseries of
LNCS. The remaining accepted papers will be published in a local
edition, both in hard-copy, CD-ROM and on the web.

applying GP-type algorithms to game environments. Although a small
body of research applying these systems to relevant areas of game
development exists, these are dispersed across different conferences
and journals. The CIG conference presents an ideal setting to bring
together these different applications, and to substantiate the
applicability of GP to game environments.
This special session will provide an opportunity to illustrate the
potential for applications of GP for computer gaming; on the other
hand, it will also provide an opportunity for researchers using GP
techniques to learn from others using them for gaming. The session
will thus help to bridge the gap between both research fields.

following categories:
* REGULAR (FULL) PAPERS limited to 12 pages.
* SHORT PAPERS limited to 6 pages.
* POSTER limited to 2 pages.
Submissions must be original and not published elsewhere. The
submissions will be peer reviewed by at least three members of of the
International Program Committee. All accepted papers will appear in
CD-ROM Proceedings with an ISBN (pending). A selection of best full
papers will appear in the Post-Conference Proceedings published by
Springer in its LNCS series.
At least one author of each accepted paper is required to attend the
conference to present the work. Authors are supposed to agree with
this requirement at the time of submission.
