In this program you will spend time in southern India exploring the affects of the
transition from colonialism to a modern nation-state. Globalization, development,
gender issues, labor market, environmental issues all will be explored within the
complex socio-economic and political history perspective in India. Highlights in-
clude Bangalore-the Silicon Valley of India, Elephant Ride, Kathakali dance
performance and a Cruise on the Kerala Backwaters.


2) CHINA: China at the Crossroads: People in Motion NEW!

6 credits in Anthropology or Chinese.

Synthesis Requirement!
The city of Chengdu, where this program takes place,
has been one of the foremost commercial sites in China since the Tang Dynasty
1200 years ago. As such it is a perfect place to explore how age, gender, generation,
structure of social relations and kinship relate to national economic, political and
cultural structures. The program will also look at migration as a social and economic
process. Of course there will be fun too with lectures on Calligraphy, Martial Arts,
Buddhism and Taoism. The program will start in Beijing and end in Shanghai.
