Dear Potential Senegal Program Participant:

As we celebrate Black History Month, is there a better time than now to consider a trip to West Africa?

George Mason University's Center for Global Education invites you to
study this summer in Dakar,
the capital of Senegal
and a thriving city with more than a million inhabitants.

While on this month-long program students will learn about "Teranga," a term that roughly translates
to English as "hospitality." Students may earn 6 credits of their choice across the following disciplines:
Global Affairs, History, African American Studies, Anthropology, Independent Study, Art History,
New Century Learning, Francophone Literature, and Comparative Literature.

Topics of interest include but are not limited to: various Senegalese music and dance traditions, Islam
in West Africa, the Transatlantic Slave Trade, Senegalese family structure, and Senegalese literature.
Students will also have the opportunity to take Wolof language lessons, listen to talks by local experts,
and go on excursions to three different parts of Senegal:
Goree Island, Touba, and Saint Louis,
the former French West African capital.

After the Baobab Center gives students a thorough orientation on Senegalese life and culture that includes
tours of Dakar, students will move in with their Senegalese host families.

This year's program will be led by Dr. Laura Fyfe, an Assistant Professor of French in the Department
of Modern & Classical Languages at George Mason University. Over the last 5 years, Professor Fyfe
has led trips abroad for the Center for Global Education to Paris, Monaco, Morocco, and Guadeloupe.
This will be the third time she has led a group to Senegal. Fyfe is also the Faculty Advisor to the French
Club and the French Language Program Coordinator here at George Mason.

Financial aid and scholarships may be applied to this program. Interested? Questions? Please contact
