Hello, DAEN Students!

Our program is always looking for new ways to improve and diversify our interdisciplinary program, and because of that, we are in the process of trying to create a Computational Linguistics concentration option for students in the DAEN MS. While it has not been added to the catalog yet, we will begin allowing students to pursue select Linguistics electives. These electives will introduce students to natural language systems and phenomena so they can be prepared to design robust data analytic methods that scale to accommodate the diversity of language systems and questions of language use.  You must speak to the DAEN Program advisor to get permission to take these courses.

The eligible courses include:

Linguistics Foundation Courses:

LING 687             Syntax I (planned for Fall 2022)

LING 689             Morphology (planned for Spring 2023)

Computational Linguistics Core:

LING 675             Computational Linguistics I (planned for Spring 2023)

LING 775             Computational Linguistics II

Additional electives:

LING 650             Introduction to Sociolinguistics (planned for Fall 2022)

LING 685             Typology

Important: At the moment, these electives will only be able to count towards the MS in DAEN if the student gets direct approval from the DAEN Program Advisor (Mary Baldwin-Slupe [log in to unmask]) as these are specialized courses and we must confirm they will fit with your path of study.  This can be done via email or, preferably, in an advising appointment. At the moment these courses are only available to students in the individualized concentration.

If you are interested in any of these Linguistics electives, please fill out this survey or email me directly. You can also make an advising appointment with me to discuss the course options.

Best Regards,
Mary
