Subject: Postdoctoral Research Position Available in Deep
Reinforcement Learning for Continual Learning

Hello all,

A fully funded, two-year postdoc with competitive salary is available
in Jeff Clune’s lab in the computer science department at the
University of Wyoming (http://secure-web.cisco.com/1OoAEU4ww-ujFAIixKMbAtbI5U5T1SDU6zTsEDLWpumWpboWjkG-e6l1r5PwmZNH33n1Eu7AIQZ0k7o7WvZS4Fia6QgCxMdqS8gRfiqufdo-VuxHBcKe64j4GhHs8fpVcopU-O41O90GIs6yYP-_rocbsFXvaYE-m-UAXLEYddDgV1r1bYypRtOsJVXOUgQ7YLyUBnKRVmPHsowIT1UI1RL8wWX9YLE34bvUDXe4Ln6WU3iYFU437rkXR8sAtJ8Pw83ql7qDFk6-LYwNbrhJBZyUq6I9ZubYjhReH5O59qXjhq4c3oZrR3uvtu4KZN8Xh4oBkS6iladgWfbt-GP1BMxJr5m2-THeNdC1r6vPW1rb9liJYJoYFicc5x5-rOX-bVk8U8Te1vvo8d2IPISB5u5U5T0cRpHABccp0LqYQ-LM2_ABA15XUNMzaLKry9zZuvEr4dSDz8jDaXQwobrsLfw/http%3A%2F%2Fwww.evolvingai.org%2Fjoin%29. The research
will be in the area of advancing deep reinforcement learning towards
agents capable of continual learning. Responsibilities include helping
to design methods to enable agents to learn a variety of new tasks
without losing the ability to perform previous ones (i.e. avoiding
“catastrophic forgetting”) and testing these method on both simulated
and physical robots (you will have primary access to 3 Fetch Research
robots to perform your experiments).

This position will be advised by Professors Jeff Clune and Nick Cheney
at the University of Wyoming. It is available immediately, and
applicants will be considered on a rolling basis – though some
flexibility on start date is possible. Experience in deep learning
and/or reinforcement learning is desired. But applicants with strong
research backgrounds in relevant fields (e.g. statistics, math,
computer science), strong programming skills, and a desire to learn
more about machine learning and neural networks will also be
considered.

A fully-funded PhD studentship is available at CERCIA (the Centre of
Excellence for Research in Computational Intelligence and
Applications), School of Computer Science, University of Birmingham,
UK.

The successful candidate will work in the areas of nonlinear
optimisation, especially meta-heuristic optimisation (evolutionary
optimisation), and machine learning. In particular, the PhD project
will study novel learning algorithms for enhancing meta-heuristic
optimisation algorithms. The key research issues include the
conservation, abstraction and modelling of experience gained from
optimising one problem instance and the smart integration of such
experience/knowledge in solving related problem instances. The main
research challenges include: the representation of experience; the
mapping/transfer of the problem-solving experience across problem
instances; the incorporation of transferred experience into solving
the current problem instance at hand.

We are looking for candidates who have an excellent MSc or BSc/BEng degree in
computer science or a closely related area. We offer the successful candidate
the opportunity to work both within the academic environment (University of
Birmingham) and in an industrial setting (Honda Research Institute
Europe), providing an excellent training for future careers in either
academia or
industry.

DEADLINE: 30 April 2018.

Session: Generation Hyper-heuristics (Submission Code: 2480ffb0)

Hyper-heuristics are problem-independent generic solvers which have
been successfully applied to a wide range of combinatorial search
problems both from academia and real-world, such as timetabling,
scheduling, routing, rostering, cutting and packing. The studies on
this field is mainly considered under two categories, namely Selection
and Generation Hyper-heuristics. Selection Hyper-heuristics operate by
automatically choosing (low-level) heuristics from an existing
heuristic set while the latter type focuses on generating heuristics
from scratch based on predefined components. This stream is expecting
studies focusing on either of these hyper-heuristic types -offering
different learning approaches, utilizing distinct (meta-) heuristic
techniques while dealing with various problems.

Subject: 2nd CFP: Game-Benchmark for Evolutionary Algorithms (GECCO'18 workshop)

           GAME-BENCHMARK FOR EVOLUTIONARY ALGORITHMS

                 JULY 15-19, 2018, KYOTO, JAPAN

You submit your game-based optimisation problems, we compile them into
a publicly available benchmark and analyse it. We then discuss results
and future work in Kyoto.

Game-Benchmark? WHY?

Games are a very interesting topic that motivates a lot of research.

Key features of games are controllability, safety and repeatability, but also
the ability to simulate properties of real-world problems such as measurement
noise, uncertainty and the existence of multiple objectives. They have
therefore been repeatedly suggested as testbeds for AI algorithms. However,
until now, there has not been any concerted effort to implement such a
benchmark.

The proposed workshop is intended to fill this gap by
(1) motivating and coordinating the development of game-based problems for
EAs and
(2) encouraging a discussion about what type of problems and function
properties are of interest.

As a result of the workshop, we aim to obtain a first game-based
testsuite for the
COCO (COmparing Continuous Optimisers) platform.

If you have been working on a game-related problem that could potentially be
solved with evolutionary algorithms, submit it to our workshop. We have listed
a few suitable problem types on our website, but the more diverse problems
we have, the better will the resulting benchmark be. Plus, you'll
receive solutions
to your problem from state-of-the-art optimisation algorithms.

OK... HOW?

Instead of a call for papers, we have a call for participation regarding
game-based benchmarking functions. You as a participant are asked to
provide a problem which we will then use to produce benchmarking results.
To this end, we provide clear instructions and examples. You may also
provide an extended abstract of 2-4 pages that describes the problem you
implemented to be published in the GECCO Companion for future reference.

Submission formats

You can provide in any of the three following formats, depending on what suits
you best and how much information you can make available to us.

* Server: Host your problem on your own server and make its responses
accessible via our interface.

* Code: Give us access to your problem by making an executable or the code
available to us.

* Data: We send you a set of samples in search space (50 per dimension) and
you send us your results. Based on the data, we approximate a surrogate
function to use in the benchmark.

Awesome! WHEN?

* Abstract submission: March 27th, 2018
* Abstract acceptance notification: April 10th, 2018
* Problem submission: June 30th, 2018
* Workshop: July 15th/16th, 2018

CALL FOR PAPERS

* * * IMPORTANT DATES * * *
Full paper submission: April 9th, 2018
Acceptance notification: May 18, 2018
Final camera ready: June 4, 2018
Paper registration (strict): July 9, 2018
Workshop: October 15-17, 2018

Nowadays, society faces important challenges regarding sustainability as climate
change or the increasing world population. The solution to these challenges
lies in a more efficient and effective use of the social, economic and
environmental resources available. Computational Sustainability is an emerging
field that aims at addressing this issue through the application of mathematics
and computer science techniques in order to take advantage of the ability of
computers to process high volumes of data. Within this broad range of
computational methods, Soft Computing, the area encompassing techniques such as
neural networks, fuzzy sets, metaheuristics or probabilistic reasoning, can be
instrumental in this field given its wide application and success in areas as
decision making, resource allocation and optimization, data mining, etc.

This workshop lies in the intersection between the two mentioned
fields and aims
at gathering recent advances in the applications of Soft Computing techniques
to address the problems that arise in Computational Sustainability in order to
create a forum, in which researchers and practitioners can communicate, discuss
and share their latest findings in this topic. Papers can range from theoretical
analysis to applied research.
