Subject: Call for Papers. New Springer journal “Metaheuristics”

Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to announce the launch of a new Springer journal
“Metaheuristics”, first journal 100% dedicated to metaheuritics, which
is planned to start publication in the first half of 2018.

The topics covered by the journal are as follows (but not limited to)
• Theoretical developments on metaheuristics • Performance comparisons
of metaheuristics • Cooperative methods combining different types of
approaches • Matheuristics • Parallel and distributed metaheuristics
for multiobjective optimization • Adaptation of discrete
metaheuristics to continuous optimization • Dynamic optimization •
Software implementations • Real-life applications.

We are happy to solicit your contribution for the inaugural issue of
Metaheuristics, to be published in the first half of 2018. We are
looking for high-quality papers on any topic relevant to the journal,
including regular papers, survey papers, industry papers and short
papers. We point out the importance of statistical tests to make
coherent the comparison with competing algorithms, our particular
interest for papers bringing new theoretical ideas and our mistrust of
papers which propose a new metaphor bringing nothing new but
confusion.

Submissions should contain original material that has not been
submitted or published elsewhere. The submission should include an
abstract and keywords, authors, and specify which author serves as
contact author. All submissions will be carefully reviewed by at least
three experts.

Submissions have to be formatted according to the journal’s guidelines

Subject: CFP: Game-Benchmark for Evolutionary Algorithms (GECCO'18 workshop)

GAME-BENCHMARK FOR EVOLUTIONARY ALGORITHMS

                 JULY 15-19, 2018, KYOTO, JAPAN

You submit your game-based optimisation problems, we compile them into
a publicly available benchmark and analyse it. We then discuss results
and future work in Kyoto.

Game-Benchmark? WHY?

Games are a very interesting topic that motivates a lot of research.

Key features of games are controllability, safety and repeatability, but also
the ability to simulate properties of real-world problems such as measurement
noise, uncertainty and the existence of multiple objectives. They have
therefore been repeatedly suggested as testbeds for AI algorithms. However,
until now, there has not been any concerted effort to implement such a
benchmark.

The proposed workshop is intended to fill this gap by
(1) motivating and coordinating the development of game-based problems for
EAs and
(2) encouraging a discussion about what type of problems and function
properties are of interest.

As a result of the workshop, we aim to obtain a first game-based
testsuite for the
COCO (COmparing Continuous Optimisers) platform.

If you have been working on a game-related problem that could potentially be
solved with evolutionary algorithms, submit it to our workshop. We have listed
a few suitable problem types on our website, but the more diverse problems
we have, the better will the resulting benchmark be. Plus, you'll
receive solutions
to your problem from state-of-the-art optimisation algorithms.

OK... HOW?

Instead of a call for papers, we have a call for participation regarding
game-based benchmarking functions. You as a participant are asked to
provide a problem which we will then use to produce benchmarking results.
To this end, we provide clear instructions and examples. You may also
provide an extended abstract of 2-4 pages that describes the problem you
implemented to be published in the GECCO Companion for future reference.

Submission formats

You can provide in any of the three following formats, depending on what suits
you best and how much information you can make available to us.

* Server: Host your problem on your own server and make its responses
accessible via our interface.

* Code: Give us access to your problem by making an executable or the code
available to us.

* Data: We send you a set of samples in search space (50 per dimension) and
you send us your results. Based on the data, we approximate a surrogate
function to use in the benchmark.

Awesome! WHEN?

* Abstract submission: March 27th, 2018
* Abstract acceptance notification: April 10th, 2018
* Problem submission: June 30th, 2018
* Workshop: July 15th/16th, 2018

ANTS 2018
Eleventh International Conference on Swarm Intelligence
October 29–31, 2018. Rome, Italy
Up-to-date information at http://www.swarm-intelligence.eu/ants2018/

Scope of the Conference

Swarm intelligence is the discipline that deals with the study of
self-organizing processes both in nature and in artificial systems.
Researchers in ethology and animal behavior have proposed a number of
models to explain interesting aspects of collective behaviors such as
movement coordination, shape-formation or decision making. Recently,
algorithms and methods inspired by these models have been proposed to
solve difficult problems in many domains. Among these, it is worth
mentioning ant colony optimization (ACO) and particle swarm
optimization (PSO), focusing respectively on discrete and continuous
optimisation problems. Also, Swarm robotics represents another
application of techniques derived from swarm intelligence for the
design of collaborative multi-robot systems featuring enhanced
efficiency, robustness and scalability.

Relevant Research Areas

ANTS 2018 solicits contributions dealing with any aspect of swarm intelligence.
Typical, but not exclusive, topics of interest are:
- Behavioral models of social insects or other animal societies that
can stimulate new algorithmic approaches.
- Theoretical and empirical and research in swarm intelligence.
- Application of swarm intelligence methods (e.g., ant colony
optimisation or particle swarm optimisation) to real-world problems.
- Theoretical and experimental research in swarm robotics systems.

Part of FAS* - Foundations and Applications of Self* Systems
Co-located with the IEEE International Conference on Autonomic
Computing (ICAC 2018)

AIMS AND MOTIVATION

The aim of the Self-Adaptive and Self-Organizing Systems conference
series (SASO) is to
provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of research on the
foundations of
engineered systems that self-adapt and self-organize. The complexity
of current and
emerging networks, software, and services can be characterized by
issues such as scale,
heterogeneity, openness, and dynamics in the environment. This has led
the software
engineering, distributed systems, and management communities to look
for inspiration in
diverse fields (e.g., complex systems, control theory, artificial
intelligence, chemistry,
psychology, sociology, and biology) to find new ways of designing and
managing such
computing systems in a principled way. In this endeavor, self-organization and
self-adaptation have emerged as two promising interrelated approaches.
They form the basis
of many other so-called self-* properties, such as self-configuration,
self-healing, or
self-optimization. SASO aims to be an interdisciplinary meeting, where
contributions from
participants with different backgrounds leads to the fostering of a
cross-pollination of
ideas, and where innovative theories, frameworks, methodologies,
tools, and applications
can emerge.

Subject: Workshop on Developmental Neural Networks at PPSN 2018

A workshop on Developmental Neural Networks will be held at the 15th
International Conference on Parallel Problem Solving from Nature (PPSN
2018), Coimbra, Portugal, on the 8th or 9th of September.

In nature, brains are built through a process of biological
development in which many aspects of the network of neurons and
connections change, shaped by external information received through
sensory organs. However, many modern artificial neural network (ANN)
models do not include developmental mechanisms and regard learning as
the adjustment of connection weights, while some that do use
development restrain it to a period before the ANN is used.

It is therefore worthwhile to understand the cognitive functions
offered by development and to investigate the fundamental questions
raised by artificial neural development. In this workshop, we will
explore existing and future approaches that aim to incorporate
development into ANNs.

Two invited speakers (to be announced) will present a biological and
computational view of neural development. We welcome anyone to
participate and encourage the submission of an extended abstract 2-4
pages (LNCS format). Accepted submissions will be distributed online
and presented during the workshop.

Submission

A 2-4 page PDF file in LNCS format should be emailed to the workshop
organizers by May 21, 2018 to be considered for acceptance in the
workshop.

challenging single- and multi-objective optimization problems. The
competition is organized in the scope of the Genetic and Evolutionary
Computation Conference (GECCO'2018, http://secure-web.cisco.com/1_Jr3v3BhkK3nYpy2JtxBBgxM-615yIl9cR4kif3rhSqNGqHJw9XYC0shet4e-cOmpjbEX60-vUyx0k-XtpYygGkaCriSTVQ12hCy7mK-urLeOR5onJOq2DUz-WOY6KUPUOg80DvUt2YdZgwV6uLa2XgxnfW3taCg0SBl7-yKobzBFUCXVj9kkQkdd8kogsMJO7Z9m0PGgtRts3L3rTyH9uxuYPoxutbLSzGWR44k7s-sUNa5_m-zvEAZcJtoDZiVNBkh_XP3yO5jeZEw2FDAWAtvkU338aErsYqVQkI8SNmxZM_2Ns34Hg-Qdvc_XsZ5Z0Jq9jw3Jn_JBcCNkYPJe0mA3OQ4Xupi1Bjb1lG77CG8lVpaq7Yp4WL0T2I_R-1--IcPzgk89Qp42CEEdQnuaZQ8YROI_Wq-n3W6-9O0iAuYxfQrrgDieV3Z2-RWjJmjcV2K6qC5B10i1zoJCdVlww/http%3A%2F%2Fgecco-2018.sigevo.org%2F%29.

BBComp is the first competition platform in the continuous domain
where test problems are truly black boxes to participants. The only
information known to the optimizer and the participant is the
dimension of the problem, bounds on all variables, and a budget of
black box queries.

The competition is also the first web/online optimization competition
in evolutionary computation domain. It aims at attacking a growing
impact of over-fitting of optimization algorithms to a narrow set of
existing benchmark problems. The competition was run five times so
far, attracting more than 100 unique submissions, including some
state-of-the-art commercial solvers.

Computation

====================================================
IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation:
Special Issue on Theoretical Foundations of Evolutionary Computation
====================================================

CALL FOR PAPERS

================
I. AIM AND SCOPE
================
Evolutionary computation (EC) methods such as evolutionary algorithms,
ant colony optimization and artificial immune systems have been
successfully applied to a wide range of problems. These include classical
combinatorial optimization problems and a variety of continuous, discrete
and mixed integer real-world optimization problems that are often hard to
optimize by traditional methods (e.g., because they are non-linear, highly
constrained, multi-objective, etc.). In contrast to the successful
applications, there is still a need to understand the behaviour of these
algorithms. The achievement and development of a solid theory of bio-inspired
computation techniques is important as it provides sound knowledge on their
working principles. In particular, it explains the success or the failure of
these methods in practical applications. Theoretical analyses lead to the
understanding of which problems are optimized (or approximated) efficiently
by a given algorithm and which ones are not. The benefits of theoretical
understanding for practitioners are threefold.

1) Aiding algorithm design,
2) guiding the choice of the best algorithm for the problem at hand and
3) determining optimal parameter settings.

The aim of this special issue is to advance the theoretical understanding of
evolutionary computation methods. We solicit novel, high quality scientific
contributions on theoretical or foundational aspects of evolutionary
computation. A successful exchange between theory and practice in evolutionary
computation is very desirable and papers bridging theory and practice are of
particular interest. In addition to strict mathematical investigations,
experimental studies strengthening the theoretical foundations of evolutionary
computation methods are very welcome.

=========
II. THEMES
=========
This special issue will present novel results from different sub-areas of the
theory of bio-inspired algorithms. The scope of this special issue includes
(but is not limited to) the following topics:

-Exact and approximation runtime analysis
-Black box complexity
-Self-adaptation
-Population dynamics
-Fitness landscape and problem difficulty analysis
-No free lunch theorems
-Theoretical Foundations of combining traditional optimization
techniques with EC methods
-Statistical approaches for understanding the behaviour of
bio-inspired heuristics
-Computational studies of a foundational nature

All classes of bio-inspired optimization algorithms will be considered including
(but not limited to) evolutionary algorithms, ant colony optimization,
artificial
immune systems, particle swarm optimization, differential evolution,
and estimation
of distribution algorithms. All problem domains will be considered
including discrete
and continuous optimization, single-objective and multi-objective optimization,
constraint handling, dynamic and stochastic optimization, co-evolution and
evolutionary learning.
